    "Kærlighed uden strømper" er Johan Herman Wessels eneste teaterstykke. Det blev skrevet til skrivebordsskuffen, men gik over scenerne til publikums hulkende latter i efteråret 1772. Det farverige persongalleri indledes ved, at den unge Grethe vågner af en drøm med vished om, at hvis hun ikke bliver gift samme dag, så bliver hun det aldrig. Men hendes forlovede, skræddersvenden Johan, har ingen strømper, og det går ganske enkelt ikke at gifte sig uden. Herfra begynder så dramaet, der involverer den tidligere kæreste Mads og Johans jagt efter strømper, alt sammen i smukke vers krydret med store følelser. Johan Herman Wessel var en norsk-dansk forfatter, der levede fra 1742-1785. Han skrev både versfortællinger og udgav sit eget ugeblad, men i dag huskes han først og fremmest for teaterstykket "Kærlighed uden strømper", en parodi på franske sørgespil. Herman Wessels sidste år var ikke lykkelige, men han efterlod sig et varigt indtryk af vittig ordkunst.

    Johan Herman Wessel blev fød 6. oktober 1742 i Jonsrud Kaplanbolig i Vestby sogn Hans far præst Jonas Wessel var brorsøn af Tordenskjold. Moderen Lene Marie Schumacher skulle have været af samme slægt som Griffenfeld.Johan Herman Wessel var den 4. i rækken af 13 børn. Han har formodentlig fået privat undervisning i hjemmet. Sommeren 1761 blev Wessel og han bror dimitteretTil universitet og rejste til København hvor han tog eksamen artium i juli med meget gode karakterer. I maj det følgende år fik han laudabilis til eksamen philosophicum Han havde fra første færd i København vist sig at have litterære interesser; i en fart havde han lært sig fransk og engelsk og senere tog han fat på italiensk og spansk.Sine sprogkundskaber udnyttede han nu som lærer, han gav privatundervisning i engelsk og fransk rundt omkring i København. Men skønt Wessels værker, når man vælger de bedste af dem ud der i dag har liv og friskhed er det svært at danne sig et billede af digterens egen personlighed. Ingen samtid har givet os nogen fuldgyldig skildring af ham og af de hundrede fornøjelige Wessel anekdoter som er blevet trykt i mindst tyve oplag og genfortalt i det uendelige er det vel bare en brøkdel af sandheden.
