Table of Contents Introduction to Climbers Climbers in your garden Introduction Pergolas Bower Walks Planting Creepers against a Wall Popular Climbing Varieties Clematis Clematis Pruning Ivy Wisteria Jasmine Ampelopsis Virginia Creeper Dutchman's Pipe -Aristolochia Climbing Honeysuckles - the Lonicera Family Roses Vitis - the Vine Family Conclusion Author Bio Publisher Introduction Just imagine a garden full of walls, fences, pergolas, screens and similar places without any beautiful plant covering them. We need to be indebted to all those gardeners of ancient times who recognized the value of climbers to add to the beauty of the garden while covering possibly unsightly structures. The only problem is that as time went by, people stopped using their creativity in the matter of climbers and began to restrict the plants to just a small number in a stereotyped garden design. They forgot all about the amazing range of climbing plants, which were ready to be planted in your garden. This book is going to tell you all about a number of plants, which are definitely going to suit your own particular gardening purpose. They are also going to add something new, both in beauty and interest to your garden. Climbers can be considered to be plants which like lots of moisture and nutrition. You can call them hungry. That is why the soil to which they grow should be enriched very well before you begin the planting. They also like soil, which has been well-drained. Climbers are definitely not going to flourish in waterlogged areas. This drainage can be obtained right at the very beginning, through proper digging and preparation of the soil. The breaking up of the lower soil is essential. If it is done well, it is going to save you a good deal of disappointment afterwards. Remember to work in plenty of organic manure, leaf compost, and other natural nutritive material to enrich the soil and keep it healthy.

This is an instinct which is genetically bred in him/her. However, in the 21st century, many parents like to cushion their children so much that they do not want them to go out in the sun, breath in the fresh air, or even expose themselves to the hazards of the polluted atmosphere. So is it a surprise that many children do not know all about the joys of making a children's garden and gathering their own harvest for the first time in their lives. This book is going to tell you how you can add plenty of joy and interest in the lives of your family members, especially when their children by helping them make their own childrens' garden. Of course, the first step is not to make them feel that gardening is a duty and something which you have imposed on them. This is immediately going to put their backs up! My grandfather tried reverse psychology on us as kids, to get us to water his large garden. He tried pretending that we were very delicate, and we would catch colds if we were found playing about with his water pipes, sprinklers, and hoses. Needless to say, the moment he left for his club for the evening, we were out in the garden, watering the whole land merrily, and getting thoroughly and enjoyably drenched in the bargain. And we roped in the help of our friends and playmates too whose own grandfathers were also very particular about the health of their own grandchildren, when subjected to the close proximity of hosepipe water! Naturally, this bit of inverse psychology worked equally well, when he said that our hands were too little to do the weeding, and we decided to prove that he was wrong. Naturally, after finding the piles of weeds when he came back from his club, he had to admit that he was wrong and asked grandma to reward us with extra helpings of chocolate cake for being such tireless little soldiers. So you could say that in the initial stages, we did our share of gardening through not so altruistic motives, but soon we got addicted to the feel of soil between our fingers. But then that was natural because man and the earth are bound together, naturally.

However, in very little time it has managed to grow into a broader perspective of living, which requires leading a simple, greener and a meaningful way of life. It totally negates the basic concept of society that the more you have the better.

A Beginner's Guide to Garden Pests and Diseases Organic Control of Pests - Insecticides, Pesticides, Fungicides Table of Contents Introduction Animal Pests Cats Dogs Children Birds Green Fly and Black Fly Neem oil Thrips and Red Spider Cuckoo spit Leaf Cutting Bees and Caterpillars Earwigs Slugs Wood lice and ants Leaf Mining Maggots Soil pests Vegetable pests Weeds Moss Fungal Diseases Rust, Mildew and Leaf Spot Conclusion Author Bio Introduction It does not matter whether you have plants growing indoors, or a garden outdoors - where there is really, there are going to be pests. These are going to be insect pests. Also, you are going to be pestered no pun intended with plant diseases. This book is an introduction to Garden pests and diseases, and how you can cure them organically. As I definitely do not advocate chemical pesticides in my garden, especially on my plants which I am going to feed my family or eat my own self, you are also going to get organic pesticide cures, which are going to help you get an insect free and fungus free produce and harvest. The ills from which the garden suffers are usually divided into animal pests and fungus diseases. Weeds also really can be included under this heading, as they have almost as detrimental an affect upon garden plants as either of the other classes of affliction. There should be no delay in dealing with all these three types of destructive elements in your garden because the damage caused by their inroads on your plants are often going to be extensive and cumulative in effect. Prompt action should always be taken and where the preventive measures are possible the resulting improvement in in plant health will be marked. I am going to start with animal pests, who are definitely not going to be controlled by pesticides. However, they are going to be preventive measures, which help take care of animals in your garden.

Best plants for Skeletonizing Magnolia Silver and Aspen Poplar Norway and silver Maple Weeping Willows and Lindens The sacred pipal - Bodh Tree of Enlightenment Sycamore Ash and Elm Duetzia - also known as Deutzia Scabra Chestnut, Hickory, and Beech Sassafras and Rose Ivy and Holly Another Quicker Method for Macerating Leaves Seedpods and Seeds DIY - Tabletop Cover Conclusion Author Bio Publisher Introduction When I was writing a book on dried flowers, and how things of beauty could be made out of them, I began to think that so many of us have not only preserved flowers between the leaves of our books - because either we want to hold on to their beauty for a little longer period of time, or we just want to hang on to the memories, which are associated with those particular flowers - but also we have reserved leaves in a manner that their beautiful skeletons are left for either our appreciation or for creating things of beauty which are going to be a joy forever. So this book is going to tell you all about how you can preserve skeleton leaves - also known as phantom leaves in Victorian times when every woman who had a little bit of time on her hands pressed these leaves in either wooden presses or between the pages of a book, and made something beautiful out of them, when she had the time and inclination. So when you look at the leaf in your hand, you are going to notice that it is made up of green material, which gives the color, solidarity, and coherent shape to the leaf. This green material is going to stick to the vascular material, which is also known as the veinwork. Our job is to get rid of the green material in such a way, that the beautiful vascular network can be seen in all its beauty while keeping well within the shape and structure of the leaves. If you are a sentimental type, and have traveled to a number of places, there is a chance that you are going to pick up a flower from a place, of which the memories are very pleasant, and also a leaf, for reminiscence sake. The only problem is, by the time the leaf dries, it is going to be really brittle, and the moment you pick it up, it is either going to crumple up or break. If you put them in a vase, it is going to lose its color, and you are going to have brown leaves collected from the Acropolis and the Parthenon or Mount Olympus, instead of those lovely green Laurel leaves! However, if you do a little bit of proper skeletonizing, you are going to have all those laurels and olive leaves to take you down memory lane 50 years from now. The positive thing about skeletonizing these leaves is that they are going to be flexible as well as strong. You can bend them, and even fold them.

How to make Neem Ash Leukoderma Cure Fever Cure Getting Rid of Bedbugs Malarial Fumigation How to Make Neem Soap Appendix How to Make Desi Ghee Conclusion Authors Bio Introduction Most of us may have heard the name of an indigenous plant found in the East, - Neem. This is the local name for a plant called Margosa-the Indian Neem. Its scientific name is Azadirachta indica. This is a long living tree, which has come down in Indian mythology as one of the gifts of the gods, given to the people of Jambudwipa- the prehistoric and historic name of the area which consisted of the Indian subcontinent. That is the reason why this plant is worshipped in many ancient traditional rituals of some religious sects in India. Neem twigs are used as a toothbrush, even today. You break off a twig, chew it to keep your teeth healthy and then brush your teeth with this chewed portion. It is definitely bitter in taste, but you never will ever have to visit a dentist. No Indian garden is considered to be complete without a Neem tree growing. The idea is that the grandfather is going to plant the Neem tree, and the future generations up to the seventh generation are going to derive benefit of this plant. That is why the first thing one does when one buys a new house is plant a Neem tree and then plant some other fruit trees like mangoes and lemons. The Neem tree used to grow wild, but it is now cultivated extensively throughout the land. It is estimated that there are about 138 million Neem trees cultivated by farmers in Neem plantations throughout India. We are not talking about the ones which grow completely wild in the forests and in the woods or in your gardens. There has been a long mythological history of the Neem, coming down the ages. Let me give you one example. The Neem grown on the outskirts of the village, would be worshipped by ancient villagers, who wanted the friendly spirits living on the Neem to grant them their wishes. That is why, they often fed the Neem with milk or buried copper coins underneath the Neem tree. I do not know who took advantage of the buried coins, but I saw this pattern being followed as an adult, when people got to know about the only Neem tree, in the locality, which happened to have been planted by my grandfather four decades earlier.

Her immediate answer was - she had no time. After that, she looked around and said she had absolutely no free space. Especially for flowerpots, herb pots, and all that mess. This book is not for all those people who go into things with enthusiasm, and then one fine day decided that they do not like dirt under their fingernails. And so they abandon all their gardening efforts and decide to do something else constructive like let us say - moan about high prices for vegetables. This book is for all those who are interested in a back to basics food revival where you are going to grow healthy food for you and your family. More and more people want to eat fresh, seasonal and locally grown foods. Most of us are urbanites. Most of our dwellings are high-rise apartments, where you are not going to find any sort of outside space. You may be living off a really busy, noisy, road and you think that no plant is going to grow there. So not true. So if gardening is your game, and even if you have just limited space, use your ingenuity and creativity and let us start this new campaign of growing your own food and growing healthy naturally. In the beginning of the twentieth century, when England was hit by World War II and all the men went to war, women decided to roll up their sleeves and put food upon their family's table, as well as feed a whole army! Yes, all the soldiers were fed with food grown by their womenfolk who had joined the woman's land Army.

Table of Contents Introduction Using Your Own Initiative to Earn Money Marketing Rules Improving your Self-Esteem Steps for Self Starting Taking Things into Your Own Hands You Are in the Driving Seat Challenge Yourself Follow Your Dream Tap Your Potential Conclusion Author Bio Publisher Introduction Being in the teaching/training line, as well as in the management line, I have had plenty of opportunities to gauge the abilities of my students as well as my professional team members. During this time I noticed that a large number of people would rather leave everybody else to do their work for them, instead of taking their own initiative and getting the work done. For students, this was acceptable; after all, they had been trained by their parents, and by their teachers to do things a certain way and unfortunately that meant that they were not encouraged to use their own creativity or initiative to think for themselves and make their own decisions. But this was not acceptable in adults, who were afraid to take decisions even in cases of emergencies, because they were scared that their decision would not be accepted by their superiors, who doesn't like initiative and self-starters on their payroll.

Naturally, the spices and herbs have been used since ancient times to help keep people healthy, beautiful, and also youthful. Remember that not everybody in grandma's time or even in the time of our ancestors could afford to go to the doctor. In fact, physicians were only restricted to people who could pay their exorbitant fees. The rest of the common crowd made do with the knowledge that had been passed down to them, by their ancestors, and also from the knowledge gained through experimenting on their own. This is how so many natural remedies came into vogue, and so many of them proved to be successful. Many of them were quack remedies, but this was because many of the ingredients which were used here were rather astonishing, when seen by a 21st century perspective. Nevertheless, there was some particular reason, why these quack remedies proved to be successful, because they had some material in them, which was able to cure people. Now let us take for example, the use of goose grease, for rubbing on the scalp to make the hair grow faster. Goose grease is nothing but fatty oil. It moisturized the scalp. You could get the same results by rubbing in sheep fat. So if our ancestors did not have one thing, they made do with something approximating that item, in their opinion. So one had to use goose grease and passed on this knowledge to his descendants, the coming generations began to believe that yes, this was the product, which would make your hair grow long, lustrous, and healthy. It would also keep your scalp dandruff free. Now, what was the reason why so many people in ancient times kept healthy, even though they lived in unhygienic surroundings? Firstly, they had a strong constitution, and did not coddle themselves. They knew the value of the sun and the fresh air, and they stayed out as much as they could. They just came home to rest, eat, and possibly recuperate, if they suffered from some ailment or from injuries. Also, they were very particular about their diet. They enjoyed plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables. They also drank fresh milk in large quantities whenever they could, as well as ate milk products like butter, butter, milk, cheese, and cottage cheese as often as they could, and when they could afford it. The wealth of a tribe depended on that the amount of cows and goats they had. Other livestock was also very precious, but these came paramount. Whenever people of one tribe were attacked by people of other tribes, the cry went up "cows, pigs, horses, goats and sheep first, children second." The young children along with the animals were hidden away with the elders, who led the adults of the tribe do the fighting. This fighting was done, sometimes to the death, by the men and women of the tribe. The elders, who were unable to fight, were considered to be the people who would help the children survive, with knowledge about their ancient heritage. This was the time when herbal lore was passed down to the generations from the elders of the tribe to the young next-generation and the youngest generation.

That is because we have taken this gift for granted. This book is going to give you guidelines for keeping your eyes healthy, and full of vigor. You may have read a large number of articles, in journals about eyes, and most of them are going to concentrate more about how you can beautify these windows to your soul. However, what is the use of all those artificial cosmetic enhancers, applied on your eyes, when you find your vision blurry, your eyes aching, and headaches brought about due to eyestrain? Most of us tend to neglect the health of our eyes and take them, as I said for granted because we are so used to using them that we do not bother much about their general health. The moment they start aching, we rub them and go to the Internet to see for any remedies, which are going to stop them aching. And then we apply slices of cucumber or tea bags to those eyes, which are tired in a measure to refresh them. Look at us, we have reached the stage when the eyes are strained and tired. Instead of shutting down that strenuous work before we reach that particular stage, we allow them to start aching, accompanied with headaches. Then we place ourselves on the nearest bed, with cucumber slices, teabags, ice packs, or anything else to give our eyes a bit of rest. By the age of 40, we start finding ourselves confronted with vision problems. That is the time we are going to make our rounds of the ophthalmologist, and perhaps an eye specialist, who is going to tell us that we need corrective spectacles. We are either suffering from myopia - short sight- or hyperopia, - long sight. And then you put on your prescription glasses or perhaps contact lenses. And you remember to key in the number of that shop which sells you your glasses, on your cell phone because you do not know when you would need another pair and when. The fact is that the care of our eyes and vision should have begun much earlier. Our eyes are our most precious assets, and looking after them could make the crucial difference between good eyesight and a blurred one.

It has an area of 6,459 square miles. Maui is situated on the eastern end of the chain and is the second largest in the chain of Hawaiian Island which consists of 8 major islands and 124 islets. Maui caters to any type of tourist whether rich or budget conscious. It is often called the playground, to all sorts of tourists. Those who go to Maui are looking for wide adventures and an escape from the large crowds like the one in Oahu. The island of Maui is graced with abundant pristine beaches where tourists could either go swimming or hit the surf for a remarkable windsurfing experience. The scorching sun is also at its most intense because the volcanoes in the island block the precipitation from getting to the shielded side of the island. Whereas the west coast of Maui is barren, its east coast is a paradise of green valleys, ethereal forests, and captivating waterfalls. The island is not only perfect for beach bums, but also for the nature lovers. Maui is a perfect getaway place for a Hawaiian vacation. There is not any place in the world where you could experience almost everything on a small island such as Maui. More so, there is nothing to worry about traveling in Maui because attractions are accessible through vehicles as the roads skirt the edges of the island's coastline.

Table of Contents Knowing the Value of Green Manure Using green manure for a richer fertile soil Table of Contents Introduction A Green Manure Experiment The Green Manure Revolution Taking Care Of the Green Manure Crop Types of Green Manures Mustard As a Green Fertilizer Ryegrass Purifying "Dirty" Land "The Little Man" Paucity of Water? Conclusion Lime in Your Soil Author Bio Publisher Introduction A good example of green manure - Phacelia tanacetifolia For a number of us gardeners out there, experienced as well as newbies, the moment somebody tells us about nourishing the soil, our minds immediately go back straight to the packages of chemical fertilizer that we have bought so recently. And if we are organically minded, we think of the compost that has been decomposing in one corner of our garden, for the past 6 months. I wrote a book called Feeding the Hungry Soil about how you can feed the hungry side with a large amount of natural compost, leaf compost, poultry manure, and bone meal and other ways in which the soil can replenish the nourishment which it has lost during the growing of your harvest. If you are interested in knowing more about this particular essential area of helping your garden to grow naturally you can purchase this book on Amazon. This book is a continuation of how you can keep feeding the land. Naturally, you are going to be using time-tested and timeworn methods, which have been used for millenniums, and which have never poisoned the earth. Not many people know about green manuring. When I spoke about this to a horticulturalist friend, he said in a really tired sort of way - oh, you so boring botanists, whatever will you think up next? When I told him all about green manuring, he told me that he really did not have the time and the energy to promote this particular face of agriculture in his agriculture college, because really, who would like to dig deep in the ground, and put in green fertilizer? He had much better and less wearying things to do. When I told him that this was the way in which city soil in which the sand content was really high, could be made fertile again, he told me to experiment beforehand, and show him the proof, in a herb garden, so that he may think of applying this part of gardening know-how in his agricultural curriculum and practical practice. So, why am I advocating green manuring? If you are a person of Faith, just look around you. Give thanks to the bounty given to you by Mother Nature and by God. After that, you may want to look at the holy Bible. In Leviticus, God said that the land has to rest every 7 years.

That is when plant life evolved along with animal life. And that is how the surface of the earth was covered with lush fruitful vegetation, which flourished and evolved in different climates. As time went by, climatic changes also changed the nature and the appearance of these plants. From multicelled algae and fungi, they became huge multicelled giant trees, like the Sequoia, which are remnants of those glorious days of giant Green trees gone by. And soon man found out that trees were very useful to give him shelter, to give him food, and to provide him with essential fruit, leaves, and seeds to supplement his diet. That was because he was imitating the animals around him. They nibbled at leaves, he did the same thing. Sometimes he ended up with a tummy ache. Sometimes the animals ended up sick while he was left hale and hearty. But down the ages, and through lots of trial and error, he found out that every single plant out there could be put into use, even those plants we consider weeds today. The mythological and historical hanging Gardens of Babylon, which were supposed to have been built by Nebuchadnezzar, but in actuality were built by Sennacherib in Nineveh, Assyria, about 300 km away from Babylon. These were lush with green trees from all over the world. And historians who are not really bothered about historic authenticity and the names of kings, did not bother much about the locality or the creator of one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. First-hand accounts of that time were not available, and when Babylon conquered Assyria, they called it the new Babylon. And so centuries later historians wrote about the wonders of marvelous trees and green vegetation, growing in Babylon. So that is the reason why since ancient times, trees, especially fruit trees have been an important part of cultured and civilized landscaping. They were and are planted in gardens for the pleasure of the general public or for your own private enjoyment. You can grow one kind of fruit or another in almost any garden. Even the smallest garden can produce apples and strawberries. If you have plenty of land you are lucky because you have the space to allow your trees to spread their wings and flourish.

Just like any other normal red-blooded and healthy child, I loved getting grimy and dirty, rooting about in the garden when young. And I was fortunate to have elders around me, who positively enjoyed encouraging us kids to go out and play in the dirt and sun, instead of wrapping us up in cotton wool and clucking in concern when we got dirty and scrubby. Luckily, my father always used to be transferred to out of the way mountain fastnesses and other forest laden places, where there was plenty of space to make really huge gardens - flowers and vegetables, with plenty of sun, water, and rich organic soil. That was the time when people did not bother about spraying every single plant surface with poisonous pesticides. So naturally, the habit of digging my fingers deep into rich soil continued when I grew up. But that was when I found out, that the world consisted of places, where you could not manage to have huge gardens outdoors. As adults, it was possible that you would spend most of your time living in cooped up flats like pigeons or doves in their cotes. So it was natural, that I began to look for other ways and means, in which I could grow my own kitchen garden in those limited areas. And so I began kitchen gardening on the roof. But if you have a large backyard, so much the better. Remember, a kitchen garden is a thing of beauty and a joy forever. You are going to get fresh fruit and vegetables, throughout the year. You have the pleasure of making something outdoors. You do not have to restrict your kitchen garden to just vegetables - you can also plant herbs, and even flowers. My kitchen garden has sunflowers, marigolds, Gladiolus, and even roses.
