The Hieroglyphic Monad is a book written by John Dee, a renowned English mathematician, astronomer, and occultist, in 1564. It is a complex and esoteric treatise that explores the relationship between symbols, numbers, and the universe. The book is structured around the concept of the monad, a symbol that Dee believed encapsulated the fundamental principles of the universe. He argues that this symbol contains within it all of the knowledge and wisdom of the cosmos, and that by understanding its meaning, one can unlock the secrets of the universe. The book is written in a highly symbolic and cryptic style, drawing on a range of mystical and occult traditions, including Hermeticism, Kabbalah, and alchemy. Dee uses a variety of diagrams and illustrations to convey his ideas, often incorporating complex geometrical shapes and astrological symbols. Despite its challenging and enigmatic nature, The Hieroglyphic Monad has been highly influential in the development of esoteric philosophy and occultism. It continues to be studied and debated by scholars and practitioners of these traditions to this day. This is a new release of the original 1946 edition. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. We have thousands of titles available, and we invite you to search for us by name, contact us via our website, or download our most recent catalogues. The present volume contains two curious documents concerning Dr. Dee, the eminent philosopher of Mortlake, now for the first time published from the original manuscripts. I. His Private Diary, written in a very small illegible hand on the margins of old Almanacs, discovered a few years ago by Mr. W. H. Black, in the library of the Ashmolean Museum at Oxford. II. A Catalogue of his Library of Manuscripts, made by himself before his house was plundered by the populace, and now preserved in the library of Trinity College, Cambridge. The publication of this Diary will tend perhaps to set Dee's character in its true light, more than any thing that has yet been printed. We have, indeed, his 'Compendious Rehearsall, ' which is in some respects more comprehensive, but this was written for an especial purpose, for the perusal of royal commissioners, and he has of course carefully avoided every allusion which could be construed in an unfavourable light. In the other, however, he tells us his dreams, talks of mysterious noises in viii his chamber, evil spirits, and alludes to various secrets of occult philosophy in the spirit of a true believer. Mr. D'Israeli has given a correct and able view of his character in his 'Amenities of Literature, ' which is remarkably confirmed in almost every point by the narrative now published. 'The imagination of Dee, ' observes that elegant writer, 'often predominated over his science; while both were mingling in his intellectual habits, each seemed to him to confirm the other. Prone to the mystical lore of what was termed the occult sciences, which in reality are no sciences at all, since whatever remains occult ceases to be science, Dee lost his better genius.' I shall refer the reader to this popular work instead of attempting an original paper on the subject, which would necessarily be greatly inferior to that drawn by the masterly hand of the author of the 'Curiosities of Literature.'

The Hieroglyphic Monad is a book written by Dr. John Dee, an English mathematician, astronomer, astrologer, and occult philosopher who lived during the 16th and 17th centuries. The book is a treatise on the nature of the universe and the relationship between the microcosm and the macrocosm, presented in the form of a mystical symbol known as the Hieroglyphic Monad. The Hieroglyphic Monad is a complex symbol that represents the unity of all things in the universe, from the smallest particle to the largest galaxy. It is composed of various elements, including geometric shapes, astrological symbols, and alchemical symbols, and is said to contain the key to understanding the mysteries of the universe. In the book, Dee explains the meaning and significance of the Hieroglyphic Monad, and how it can be used to unlock the secrets of the universe. He explores various topics, including the nature of time and space, the relationship between the physical and spiritual worlds, and the role of the human soul in the grand scheme of things. The Hieroglyphic Monad is a highly esoteric work, and is considered by many to be one of Dee's most important contributions to the field of occult philosophy. It has been studied and interpreted by generations of scholars and practitioners of the occult, and continues to inspire new ideas and insights into the mysteries of the universe.1946. Translated into English for the first time, this book was written by the Elizabethan magus, Dr. John Dee in 1564. He explains his discovery of the monas, or unity underlying the universe, as seen in a hieroglyph or symbol. The monad is representative of the alchemic process and goal of the magus, who in partaking of the divine, achieves that gnostic regenerative experience of becoming God and thus furthering the redemption and transmutation of the worlds. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. A central text of occult literature, now in a deluxe Weiser Ankh hardcover edition with new ancillary material (a new introduction, corrections to the text, appendices, and other enhancements) by renowned scholar Joseph Peterson. Three-piece quarter binding with black cloth spine and blue cloth over heavy boards Gold and black foil stamping on case with blind frame, front and back; gold stamping on spine Headbands, ribbon marker, and marbled endpapers Printed on quality, archival (acid-free), 55# natural-colored paper, with sewn signatures and reinforced spine "This book is not just a fancier version of the older edition. Anyone interested in Renaissance magic or Enochian magic will want this on their shelf." --Jason Miller, author of Consorting with Spirits and other books and courses Mysteriorum Libri Quinque--the Five Books of Mysteries--written by John Dee in the 16th century, remains to this day one of the most important core texts of occult literature and a comprehensive guide to Enochian magic, encompassing language, symbolism, rituals, and practical techniques. This deluxe Weiser Ankh edition is a compilation of John Dee's secret spiritual treatises and was prepared from the original manuscript (preserved in the British Library) in Dee's own handwriting. These secret writings were discovered long after John Dee's death (c. 1609); they had been tucked away in a hidden compartment of an old wooden chest and were remarkably spared from destruction--uncovered only a few years before the Great Fire of London in 1666. In these five secret treatises, John Dee, one of the most renowned scholars of the Elizabethan era, records in minute detail his research into the occult. Throughout his life, Dee had kept concealed his writings on the nature of humankind's contact with angelic realms and languages. In this comprehensive work, Joseph Peterson presents a brief biography of John Dee, detailing his work in astronomy, mathematics, navigation, the arts, astrology, and the occult sciences, and calling him a "true Renaissance man." Although this present work is concerned primarily with Dee's occult experiments, through it, we catch many glimpses of Elizabethan life and politics. Mysteriorum Libri Quinque presents Dee's main achievement: five books, revealed and transcribed between 1581 and 1583, detailing his system for communicating with the angels and bringing to light mysteries and truths that scholars and adepts have been struggling to understand and use ever since. While Dee's influence was certainly felt in his lifetime, his popularity has grown tremendously since. His Enochian system was used and adapted by the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn and subsequently by Aleister Crowley. First published by Weiser Books in 2003 as John Dee's Five Books of Mystery: Original Sourcebook of Enochian Magic, this new deluxe Weiser Ankh edition has been extensively updated and expanded. It includes new commentary that reflects twenty years of research by editor Joseph Peterson, corrections to the text based on a review of high-resolution scans of the original manuscripts only recently made available by the British Library, new appendices reflecting more recent scholarship, and translations of the many Latin passages and extensive footnotes, making this work more accessible to readers.

By these indications and signs, for which they should be very thankful, they themselves will be able to take vengeance on their enemy. And I affirm (O King!) that it is not Aesop but Oedipus who prompts me, for he presented these things to worthy souls, and ventured for the first time to speak of these supreme mysteries of Nature. I know perfectly well that there have been certain men who, by the art of the scarab, have dissolved the eagle's egg and its shell with pure albumen and have formed thereby a mixture of all; afterwards they have reduced this mixture to a yellow liquid, by a notable process, viz. by a ceaseless circulation just as the scarabs roll their balls of earth.
