Devotions upon Emergent Occasions is a 1624 prose work by the English theologian and writer John Donne, Dean of St. Paul's Cathedral in London. It is a series of reflections that were written as Donne recovered from a serious illness. The work consists of twenty-three parts ('devotions') describing each stage of the sickness. Each part is further divided into a Meditation, an Expostulation (or objection), and a Prayer. The work is an excellent example of seventeenth century English spirituality and sometimes feels a bit dated. Yet much solid nourishment can be found. "Death's Duel" is Donne's last sermon prepared for presentation before the King during Lent; it is commonly seen as Donne's own funeral oration. The biographical material is from Izaak Walton's Lives. The most famous part of the Devotions is number XVII, containing these lines: No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main. If a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe is the less, as well as if a promontory were, as well as if a manor of thy friend's or of thine own were: any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind, and therefore never send to know for whom the bells tolls; it tolls for thee.
Biathanatos is a controversial work by the renowned English poet and cleric, John Donne. First published in 1648, the book is a treatise on the subject of suicide, arguing that it is not inherently sinful and that there may be circumstances where it is justifiable. Donne's argument is based on his interpretation of Christian theology and his belief that suicide is not explicitly condemned in the Bible. The book is divided into several sections, each of which explores different aspects of the topic. In the first section, Donne presents his thesis and sets out to refute the arguments of those who believe that suicide is always a sin. He argues that suicide can be an act of bravery, and that it is not necessarily a sign of mental illness or weakness. The second section of the book examines the historical and cultural attitudes towards suicide, from the ancient Greeks and Romans to the early modern period. Donne draws on a wide range of sources to show that suicide has been viewed differently in different times and places, and that it is not always regarded as a sin.In the third section, Donne considers the moral and ethical implications of suicide. He argues that there are circumstances where suicide may be the most moral choice, such as when a person is facing unbearable suffering or is in danger of committing a greater sin. He also explores the idea that suicide can be a form of martyrdom, and that it may be a way of expressing one's faith or political beliefs. The final section of the book is a series of reflections on death and the afterlife. Donne explores the idea that death is not necessarily something to be feared, and that it can be a release from the suffering and pain of life. He also considers the possibility of an afterlife, and the idea that suicide may not necessarily lead to damnation.Biathanatos is a complex and challenging work that raises important questions about the nature of sin, morality, and the value of human life. It is a fascinating insight into the mind of one of England's greatest poets and thinkers, and a testament to Donne's intellectual courage and originality. This Is A New Release Of The Original 1648 Edition. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Biathanatos is a controversial treatise written by the English poet and cleric John Donne in 1648. The book is an exploration of the moral and theological implications of suicide, arguing that self-homicide may not be inherently sinful and should not be considered an absolute moral wrong. Donne's thesis challenges the prevailing Christian belief that suicide is a grave sin, and instead proposes that there may be circumstances under which suicide is justifiable or even morally necessary. He examines various philosophical and theological arguments against suicide, including the idea that it is a violation of natural law, a rejection of God's sovereignty, or a failure to trust in divine providence. The book is structured as a series of dialogues between a skeptic and a defender of suicide, with Donne himself serving as the mediator. Through these dialogues, Donne explores the complexity of the issue and the various factors that might influence a person's decision to take their own life. He also draws on his own experiences of grief and loss to offer a compassionate and nuanced perspective on suicide. Despite its controversial subject matter, Biathanatos was widely read and discussed in its time, and continues to be studied today as a significant work of early modern literature and philosophy. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
