El hombre mediocre está integrado por las lecciones sobre psicología del carácter que dio José Ingenieros en la cátedra de la Facultad de Filosofía y Letras de Buenos Aires, durante el año 1910.En ellas se proponía comprender cómo funcionan las sociedades humanas. Para ello establecía y describía tres tipos o caracteres que según él era posible reconocer en cualquier comunidad de seres humanos: el idealista, el hombre mediocrey el inferior.Ingenieros no ocultaba su admiración hacia el primer tipo pero, más allá de los juicios morales. Hizo el esfuerzo de entender en clave psicológica las particularidades de cada tipo y su función específica en nuestras sociedades. Así, dedicaba una parte importante de El hombre mediocre al segundo tipo, porque él constituye el grueso de las sociedades: ¿La continuidad de la vida social sería posible sin esa compacta masa de hombres puramente imitativos, capaces de conservar los hábitos rutinarios que la sociedad les transfunde mediante la educación? El mediocre no inventa nada, no crea, no empuja, no rompe, no engendra; pero, en cambio, custodia celosamente la armazón de automatismos y prejuicios y dogmas acumulados durante siglos, defendiendo ese capital común contra la asechanza de los inadaptables. Su rencor a los creadores compénsase por su resistencia a los destructores.

Los sermones laicos reunidos en el presente volumen fueron publicados en revistas estudiantiles y universitarias entre 1918 y 1923, quinquenio generador de un nuevo espíritu en nuestra América latina. Este libro completa la visión panorámica de una ética funcional. "El, hombre mediocre" es una crítica de la moralidad; "Hacia una moral sin dogmas", una teoría de la moralidad; "Las fuerzas morales", una deontología de la moralidad. Prevalece en todo el concepto de un idealismo ético en función de la experiencia social, inconfundible con los capciosos idealismos de la vieja metafísica.

El autor de este libro se propuso estigmatizar las funestas lacras morales que se llaman rutina e hipocresía y servilismo, deseando ser útil a los jóvenes que, estando en edad propicia para evitarlas, puedan formarse ideales y ennoblecer su vida.

El presente texto corresponde a una conferencia pronunciada en el Ateneo de Estudiantes Universitarios. Publicada en Revista de Filosofía, 1/2 Obras de E. Spinelli, Buenos Aires, 2° Semestre de 1915.

"Simulación de la locura", de José Ingenieros. José Ingenieros fue un médico, psiquiatra, psicólogo, farmacéutico, escritor, docente, filósofo y sociólogo ítalo-argentino (1877-1925)

Estudiando ciencias naturales en las universidades de Heidelberg y Lausanne, tuve ocasión de releer, en 1912-1913, las principales obras de Florentino Ameghino. Pude apreciarlas en su armonioso conjunto y redacté una "Exposición sistemática", publicada en los Archivos de Pedagogía y Ciencias Afines, dirigidos por Víctor Mercante (La Plata, Abril de 1914). Posteriormente, publiqué en La Prensa Médica Argentina (1944) siete artículos sobre las doctrinas antropogénicas de Ameghino, y una sinopsis de las mismas en la Revista de Filosofía (1915), incluida más tarde en el conocido volumen Doctrinas y Descubrimientos.

Solicitado, de ha tiempo, nuestro espíritu hacia el estudio de las ciencias antropológicas y sociales, atrájonos especialmente la fase patológica de la vida individual y colectiva, tan interesante, por cierto, como sus manifestaciones normales. Es método, en las ciencias biológicas, llegar al conocimiento de la función normal por el estudio de su patología; examinando las lesiones de los centros nerviosos y relacionándolas con los síntomas previamente observados, ha podido inferirse la fisiología normal de esos centros.
