Der Zeichner Josef Herzog (1939-1998) setzt den Anfang seines gültigen Werks ins Jahr 1964. Es entstehen Aquarelle mit klar umrissenen, flächigen surrealen Konfigurationen und Tuschezeichnungen mit blattfüllenden labyrinthischen Zellstrukturen. Herzog bleibt dem Medium der Zeichnung und des Aquarells in seinem gesamten Schaffen treu. Das Sujet der Zeichnung und die Atmosphäre verändern sich dabei stetig, wobei die Linie als prägendes Element in seinem Werk eine sich wandelnde Konstante bildet. Seit 1975 verwendet der Künstler die Linie nicht mehr als formdefinierende Silhouette, sondern als eigenständiges, von jeglicher beschreibenden Funktion befreites Ausdrucksmittel, sei es in Bleistift-, Ölkreide-, Tusche- und Kugelschreiberzeichnungen oder in Aquarellen. Abgesehen von wenigen Werkgruppen mit vereinzelten flächigen Elementen beschränkt sich Josef Herzog konsequent auf die Möglichkeiten rein linearer Gestaltung. Die Linien differieren in ihrem Charakter beträchtlich von einer Werkgruppe zur nächsten, je nach Format und Wahl des Zeichenmittels, das gerade durch die vollständige Verdrängung benennbarer Motive an Bedeutung gewinnt.Zu Josef Herzogs Werk sind ab 1971 Beiträge erschienen. Ein aktueller Blick auf das überbordende zeichnerische Schaffen hingegen fehlt. Die Monografie zur Ausstellung im Kunstmuseum Luzern ab März 2022 will diese Lücke füllen und zeigt Josef Herzogs Schaffen ab den 1970er-Jahren.
