In this satirical journey through the chic lunch spots in L.A. in the 1990s, newly-divorced Danielle Wiffard navigates a maze of romantic, sexual, and musical encounters with celebrities and socialites, from a symphony maestro to a big-hatted country crooner, from a self-obsessed TV talk show host to a has-been teen idol, and a series of fleeting ecstasies and personal and natural disasters. Her lunchtime liaisons and a gaggle of gossips keep an eye on her and an eye on the garçon's hindquarters as together they refine the Art of Lunch.

Charlie Haden (1937-2014) was the rare sort of musician who transcended easy categorizationother than to say that his uniquely elegant and eloquent bass playing, with its readily recognizable sound, defined a certain pinnacle of musical communication in beau- tiful, spontaneous, and intensely emotional ways. Throughout his career, he worked with and influenced many of the most interesting musicians of the second half of the twentieth century, including Ornette Coleman, Don Cherry, Paul Bley, Carla Bley, Keith Jarrett, Billy Higgins, Paul Motion, Dewey Redman, Pat Metheny, Egberto Gismonti, Gavin Bryars, Geri Allen, Brad Mehldau, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, and literally hundreds of others. In Conversations, Haden discusses his life and politics and music and aesthetics in a series of candid interviews conducted over two decades. While parts of this collection have appeared in various periodicals, much of it is in print here for the first time.

This freewheeling, fascinating unauthorized biographybased on twenty years' worth of interviews covers the extreme ups and downs of an uncommonly eventful life, often in the musician's own words. The story begins in the heated musical milieu of Memphis in the Forties and Fifties, where Lloyd grew up with Phineas Newborn Jr. and Booker Little and cut his professional teeth as a teen playing with such blues giants as Howlin' Wolf. After high school, he moved to Los Angeles, where he attended USC and began to work with the Gerald Wilson and Chico Hamilton bands, Scott LaFaro, Gbor Szab, Don Cherry, and others. Following a notable stint with Hamilton's ensemble, contributing compositions and arrangements as well as playing, Lloyd joined Cannonball Adderley's band and moved to New York. There he worked with Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter, Richard Davis, Henry Grimes, Roy Hay
