Don Esteban is determined to possess her at any cost, while Felipe is equally determined to win her heart.Against the backdrop of the vibrant and colorful city of New Orleans, The Bright Shawl explores themes of love, passion, betrayal, and redemption. It is a sweeping and epic tale that captures the spirit of a bygone era and the timeless struggles of the human heart.1922. American novelist Hergesheimer has been called a naturalist writing of the romantic past. He is also the author of short stories, essays, biographies, and the autobiography, From an Old House. The Bright Shawl begins: When Howard Gage had gone, his mothers brother sat with his head bowed in frowning thought. The frown, however, was one of perplexity rather than disapproval: he was wholly unable to comprehend the younger mans attitude toward his experiences in the late war. The truth was, Charles Abbott acknowledged, that he understood nothing, nothing at all, about the present young. Indeed, if it hadnt been for the thoroughly absurd, the witless, things they constantly did, dispensing with their actual years he would have considered them the present ages. They were so-well, so gloomy.
