Dans les dernières années du dix-huitième siècle qui précédèrent la Révolution française, au pied des Cévennes, dans une petite bourgade du Forez, un capucin prêchait entre vêpres et complies. On était au premier Dimanche du Carême. Le jour s'en venait bas dans l'église, assombrie encore par l'ombre des montagnes qui entourent et même étreignent cette singulière bourgade, et qui, en s'élevant brusquement au pied de ses dernières maisons, semblent les parois d'un calice au fond duquel elle aurait été déposée. À ce détail original, on l'aura peut-être reconnue... Ces montagnes dessinaient un cône renversé. On descendait dans cette petite bourgade par un chemin à pic, quoique circulaire, qui se tordait comme un tire-bouchon sur lui-même et formait au-dessus d'elle comme plusieurs balcons, suspendus à divers étages.
