"Daß Diderot unter den großen Autoren der französischen Nation eine ausgezeichnete Stelle gebühre, ist zweifellos. Die Geschichte ist längst gewohnt, ihn neben Montesquieu und d'Alembert, neben Voltaire und Rousseau zu stellen. Diese allgemeine Anerkennung also hat ihm nicht gefehlt. Sobald man aber eine genauere Würdigung seiner Wirksamkeit sucht, macht sich sehr bald der große Unterschied fühlbar, der zwischen der Abwägung seiner Verdienste und der seiner mitstrebenden Zeitgenossen existiert. Diese Männer nämlich sind in ihrer Stellung völlig klar. Das Bild eines jeden von ihnen, so vielseitig sie auch waren, konzentriert sich in eine einfache Charakteristik. Ihr Leben, ihre Entwickelung, ihre Schriften, ihr Einfluß auf die Nation sind gleichsam durchsichtig gewordene Tatsachen.Ganz anders mit Diderot. Zwar die Hauptpunkte seines Lebens und Wirkens sind auch allbekannt und sie sind auch in der Allgemeinheit, in welcher sie angeführt zu werden pflegen, nicht unwahr. Sobald wir uns jedoch nach ihrer Rechtfertigung umsehen, vermissen wir gewöhnlich nur zu bald eine genügende Motivierung und können uns nicht verbergen, daß die Charakteristik Diderot's, wie sie uns geboten wird, in der Regel ein stereotypes Bild, nämlich das eines talentvollen, aber paradoxen und frivolen Skeptikers, mit unserer Zeichnung und mit zweideutigen Farben wiederholt."
