"The Faces Within" The Artists personal responses to their mental/physical/emotional state during this election past year. . Curated by Karrie Ross FACES WITHIN: We all experience the pull of emotions and the recent Presidential election of 2016 has brought many, if not all, of us to points of realization of about what, why, how we think, and feel. The question the artists were posed with is "What Does YOUR emotional FACE Look Like?" Each Artist was assigned a left or right side of face to create. Some started their projects before November 8th and others after, the results are amazing, I hope you'll be able to relate to, and find a connection to, their feelings. There will also be some small pieces reflecting a full face and one emotion. Participating Southern California based Artists: Nancy Larrew, Sarah Stone, Ben Zask, Steve Shriver, Scott Meskill, Anna Stump, Vicki Barkley, Raymond Logan, Randi Matushevitz, Malka Nedivi, Leonard D Greco, Jr., Beanie Karmen, Lore Elkelberry, Cansu Bulgu.
b'Healthy Everyone needs a little help sometimes...and that includes OUR body, mind, and spirit! Our body is OUR world. One we are responsible to keep healthy, aware and alive. There's a cycle to health, we might call it a game...keeping our mind healthy with a positive attitude makes us want to treat our body with care, and when this happens we inspire our spirit to love and share what we've learned. When they all work together body, mind, and spirt, we create a world of peace inside and out. b'Healthy_____________ www.bebuddies.com ____________________ "b'Healthy" is an endearing story about being healthy and finding ones place in the world. This is a book about how artists collaborate during stressful times. The year 2020 is just one such time where artists had to use their ability to communicate when the outside world was going through some tough experiences. Artists are here to document through artwork that examples the world. Karrie Ross and Ashton Phillips rose to the occasion and collaborated with 50 other artists, you can search for Call and Response on the web for exhibitions #1 and #2 and #3 is in the works.###
I like thinking that artists "save" something from being forgotten. I thought this focus would be something everyone can relate to in today's world of forever changing views, new technology, and global change. I noticed that artists work to bring something that is hidden into light. That their way of seeing our world opens us to new ways of being and thinking. Different perspectives help to bring about change. The stories the artists share, will take you from Africa, Europe, to California and places in between. You'll learn about different cultures, new technology, variety of feelings, visionary insights, art process, mediums, personal histories and more. Each page takes you to another place of question and seeing the "what" is important enough for the following artists to share about in the hopes that their "it" will be saved. We don't communicate without a language of some kind-see, hear, taste, smell, touch, intuit-are all sense languaging/vibration. Each artist develops a special-to-them tone-that "thing" that GETS them going. Each artwork created is a note in their vibration. A series of artwork is a continuation of the "tone range" as it binds the art together and the vibration begins to be felt on a more conscious level-dialogue. Then BAM! the vibration becomes so strong, so loud, so in-your-face that its a conversation that must be acknowledged...and shared. Mike and Joe's work have a unique language when viewed alone, and a dialogue when viewed together. With images verging on surreality or the subconscious mind, both artists pose questions of challenge creating a lively conversation. A vibration that has nothing to do with if they are similar or how different in style or medium or subject. On the following pages please enjoy their artwork and read how each artist reflects on their work within the dynamics of personal language, dialogue, and conversaton.
PAPERBACK: Conversations happen everywhere...between men, women, children, pets and especially in our minds with ourselves. Artist Karrie Ross listens to her internal conversations. "I believe the best way to create a happy healthy self is to attend to the internal dialogue that is going on within us all the time, the act of observing and listening to what is being said, attending to and assessing those unique conversations..." "My Breasts Talking" is about her breasts' observations and the attitude they express... you know, one that stands out from the rest of the body. They are like a precocious two-year-old talking, talking, talking... wanting attention, complaining, giving orders... expressing! "My Breasts Talking" shares Ross' own sense of whimsy of this experience. Using humor mixed with fun and lighthearted short insights, this book is sure to fulfill the promise of interaction, introspection, and help you feel like you are there listening in as they are talking, talking, talking. The book is 140 pages of humorous thoughts... please enjoy and buy the other books in the series.
Using the Feng Shui and 5 Elements concepts of growth, love, nurture, aspire, and wisdom, Karrie Ross shares her personal journal of inspirational thoughts gathered over 30 years...the never ending journey of self discovery. Follow her and discover the magic of yourself. See your Wow! Feel your Awe! Quiet introspection builds the muscle of intuition...as you listen you are shown the wonders living life attentive to growth, love, nurture, aspire and wisdom offers.
LINE Artists are the creators and keepers of history. They work to bring the hidden to light. We can go on for ever and still take something for granted until an artist brings it to our attention... if only for a little while sharing their fascination. I believe there is a story in everything and these exhibiting artists each share their own unique 'take' on line, and the exploration of... please meet Jill Sykes "discovery" Beanie Kaman "direction" Emily Elisa Halpern "disconnect" Karrie Ross "distortion" Together "we are LINE!" I think line is taken for granted. When was the last time you really viewed the horizon, or thought about the act of standing with others to buy morning coffee. How about when you drive on the street, do you even think about it being divided into rows by lines for safety. Or when you pick up a pencil or pen and lines begin to appear in the form of words, an expression of self. Lines just are. The artists in LINE really push the limit here, and they might not have even realized that their art was exampling line... I didn't until I looked for it... line was in the shadows becoming form, in shapes watching it morph, scratched with emotions in dance, and trying to find a safe place in their awkward vibration. "It" all starts with a line.
"The Nature of Things" The Mike Kelley Gallery invited three artists to celebrate "The Nature of Things". In a world currently filled with uncertainties the attention to 'all things Nature' allows us a freedom of, and connection to the differences in our world. Each day we are called on to make choices about how to live, to be. A showing-up for the not so simple phenomena of the physical world, landscapes, animals, plants; the not so easy human condition man-made structures, social rules; and the never superficial inherent beauty of things-their sense of magic. Each with a language of its own when perception gets a hold on our soul, and we can't look away from what they demand of us. Art has a way of saving "things" from extinction, even if it's just a simple, easy, depth of a new color, sound, distraction from-there is nothing so compelling when it comes to an artistic view. Gallery A: Lillian Abel, "Energy" Gallery B: Tracey Weiss, "Metamorphosis" Gallery C: Karrie Ross, "Balance & Flow" Gallery A: Lillian Abel "Energy" My work depicts Nature, however, it is made in my studio from memory, impulse and emotions. They are abstracted by the palette knife, searching for hidden worlds and images in the paint that reveal on the picture plane. They need to be uncovered, stroked, massaged and moved onto the surface, brought up from where they are hiding; surprising me with their ability to come forth when called by my hand. Revealing the recognized of our 'world sight' as unrecognizable, opening the eye of the witness to the experienced memory of the coalescence of fierceness and delicacy in the wilderness. Beginning from the darkness, moving to find hidden worlds that lay just beyond the edge of our awareness, calling the unexplored knowledge of the unseen. Gallery B: Tracey Weiss "Metamorphosis" is an investigation into the innate cycle of nature, as well as our own society. Seasons, life cycles, survival of the fittest: these are all terms we come to know as relating to wildlife, ecology, and the natural world around us. These terms also play an important role in our man-made world of industry, advancement, and even sociology. While 35mm slides left the mainstream in the late 1970s as every household's record of their summer vacation, slide film had an extended life in the art world and academia. Artists' portfolios were captured in slides well into the late 1990's and even into the early 21st century for some. Since the digital film has taken over, slide portfolios and slide libraries have been collecting dust in artist studios and educational institutions everywhere. In the work in "Metamorphosis", viewers are invited to view these miniature, framed images as objects unto themselves, evolving from an outdated photography medium to a new sculpture medium. Gallery C: Karrie Ross "Balance & Flow" continues the questions for how exposure to higher vibrations, deep thinking, and taking actions are able to twist perception and create the ability to make conscious choices affecting personal growth. Art is a powerful influencer. Art that encourages choice creates a kinetic pull in such a way that it takes the action of 'walking away' from it to realize something changed and a safe place using space/time experiences now exists. "Balance & Flow" presents the experience of the "letting go" in her abstract paintings, paired with the introspection of her 3D figurative installation on the 5 Elements- together offering choices and reflection of 'what is' and 'what's next'-as a rock is to a stream, intentionally balancing conflict-allowing a sense of magic, inherent beauty.

"My Own Private Moon" explores the personal relationship of the artists to the moon, their connection to it, interpretation of and with this magical iconic wonder that is so distant and yet very much part of our world. Its gravitational push and pull manipulating emotional well-being, individually and collectively, and movements of oceans high and low tides are an ever present part of our physical and emotional environment. Songs, photos, movies, paintings, all address its wonder. Its images show up in folklore and varying beliefs. We attribute a face to the Moon, a consciousness, a being inside that controls-no wonder the Moon's phases have historically been linked with the word "lunatic". Astrologically, the Moon represents the inner nature of a person and its sign reveals a person's emotional and subconscious state. A few interesting facts about the Moon: - The Earth and the Moon revolve together, from Earth, we always see the same side of the Moon! - There is no "dark side" of the Moon. All parts of the Moon see sunlight equally. - Not all full Moons are the same size. - The Moon is not round! - In 1665 Earths' moon became known as Moon. The inspiration for the exhibition title ---came from the movie "My Own Private Idaho" where two best friends...embark on a journey of self discovery and find their relationship stumbling along the way." A journey of surprise and wonder...acceptance of self, others, and differences of human nature. On view are works by 21 Los Angeles based Artists: Roxene Rockwell, Dens Richardson, Ron Therrio, Ted Meyer, Stevie Love, Peggy Sivert Zask, Ada Pullini Brown, Dave Lovejoy, Bryan Ida, Wini Brewer, Susan Lizotte, Bibi Davidson, Jill Sykes, Scott Dienhart, Cathy Weiss, Sharon Suhovy, Ashley Bravin, Lena Moross, Francisco Alvarado, Barbara Nathanson, Karrie Ross
b'watchful _____ Everyone needs a little help sometimes...even our home...the Earth! Watching is observing, observing is seeing and seeing is a way of feeling. Feelings come from deep inside. Feelings are a part of being human. Feelings help us decide how we think... how we act... what we say... what we do! When we act upon our thoughts and feelings and use our imagination, we inspire amazing changes. Changes can help others who can't help themselves. Working together we can help the Earth. Feel. Think. I believe that Artists are in some way Historians... that their work saves something from becoming forgotten...and changes lives and perspectives. This book series documents by the year-I tried other ways but yearly seems to work out best. The saying "Art examples Life" is very true and can been seen yearly and sometimes major change within a story that happened in that year to affect the artists creative state of being. Again to those new to my books, I am a native to California so many of them are only of California artists. There will be some books that extend to other locations over time. Please enjoy the read. Press Your Breasts 2015 I wrote a book "My Breasts Talking" of short comments about having breasts and what they would say if they had a voice. I've created 3D artwork, I call them "Bustiers" where the front is the beauty we show the world and the back is the dialogue that goes on behind it. And now with this series of paintings I've explored using my breasts as the main element in an art project... "Press Your Breast." A hidden part for me is in the sharing of my experience, the internal beauty of breasts, with others. Some may have had illnesses, cancer, and lost their breasts, I am in process of expanding this concept into gallery exhibitions and fund raising opportunities for non-profit use. Please contact me if any part of this new project resonates with you. +++ Karrie's work centers around the personal generation of a continuous flow of energy and her belief that this energy can be shared with the world through exploring art, haikus, writing, and exampling the concepts of feng shui energy balancing. Karrie is a native of Los Angeles and describes herself as visual artist who creates art with abandon.
I believe that Artists are in some way Historians...that their work saves something from becoming forgotten. And, artists tell stories all the time in their art, words, visuals. Moments. The year 2018: On a political front was great for the USA and our midterm elections. A more even balance is been established. On a general overview of the art world in LA things seem to be expanding and moving faster. Each day there seems to be another show being posted on facebook filling up every weekend and eating into the weekdays-evenings with openings. Artists are being cautious with where they show, asking the important questions for them, the why the money, if there is insurance, how to move forward, the how to be seen. Curators jobs are getting more intense and artists are becoming more forward with questions of who, what when where why how. The importance of keeping a job-job to support the art habit and the struggles of foregoing the safety net... the full scope of being an artist is being questioned and reevaluated. On more personal level artists are getting older, seeing the world differently, participating in their passions and focusing on leaving something for the up-coming generations... art, environment, social political, learning the power of participating and the greater good. Making statements that are more in-your-face look at me. Writing the journeys to transform points of view and ways of being human. A way of humanity that seems to have been put by the wayside... for now.Featured Artists from around the World: Karen Karlsson, Jean-Luc Sanhes, Nathalie Tierce, Nidhi Agarwal, Jeff Hilbers, Sudrak Khongpuang, Freddie B., Jacqueline Steimke, Jacki Apple, Chuck Feesago, Jack Reilly, Karin Skiba, Cristina Paulos, Alison Wright, Marjorie Trandem, LaJon Miller, Barbara Kerwin, Evvie Kyrozi, Angeline Straatman, Lisa Manifold, Siori Kitajima, Niamh Ni Chearbhaill, Silvia Traistaru, Michael Maas, Daniella Smith, Aliza Bejarano, Disha Dua, Pascaline Doucin-Dahlke, Elena Mary Siff, Mohan Sundaresan, Kirk Shiflett, Nicola Anthony, Wendy Lee Gadzuk, Karen Boissonneault, Gauthier, Alexandra Rutsch Brock, Skye Amber Sweet, Christie Shinn, Ginger Van Hook, Eva (Tcz.)
