The Gambler is a novel written by Katherine Cecil Thurston. It tells the story of a young woman named Joan Carthew, who is left destitute after her father's death. In order to support herself, she takes a job as a governess to the children of a wealthy family. While working for this family, Joan becomes involved with a man named Stephen Knight, who is a notorious gambler. Despite her reservations, Joan finds herself drawn to Stephen, and the two begin a passionate love affair. However, Stephen's gambling addiction soon becomes a major problem, and Joan is forced to confront the reality of his destructive behavior. As she struggles to help Stephen overcome his addiction, Joan must also confront her own feelings and decide whether or not to stay with him. The Gambler is a compelling tale of love, addiction, and redemption, and it offers a powerful commentary on the dangers of gambling and the importance of self-control.1905. Illustrated. The Irish novelist and playwright's novel begins: An eight-mile drive over rain-washed Irish roads in the quick-falling dusk of autumn is an experience trying to the patience, even to the temper of the average Saxon. Yet James Milbanke made neither comment nor objection as mile after mile of roadway spun away like a ribbon behind him, as the mud rose in showers from the wheels of the old-fashioned trap in which he sat and the half-trained mare between the shafts swerved now to the right, now to the left, her nervous glance caught by the spectral shapes of the blackthorn hedges or the motionless forms of the wayside donkeys lying asleep in the ditches. Perhaps this stoicism was the outcome of an innate power to endure; perhaps it was a merely negative quality illustrating the lack of that doubtful blessing, imagination. The Irish novelist and playwright's fictionalized account of white magic begins: Of all the sensations to which the human mind is a prey, there is none so powerful in its finality, so chilling in its sense of an impending event as the knowledge that Death-grim, implacable Death-has cast his shadow on a life that custom and circumstance have rendered familiar. Whatever the personal feeling may be-whether dismay, despair, or relief-no man or woman can watch that advancing shadow without quailing at the heart, an individual shrinking from the terrible, natural mystery that we must all face in turn-each for himself and each alone. The first man to hurry from his place was John Chilcote, member for East Wark. He passed out of the House quickly, with the half-furtive quickness that marks a self-absorbed man; and as he passed the policeman standing stolidly under the arched door-way of the big court-yard he swerved a little, as if startled out of his thoughts. He realized his swerve almost before it was accomplished, and pulled himself together with nervous irritability. "Foggy night, constables," he said, with elaborate carelessness. "Foggy night, sir, and thickening up west," responded the man. "Ah, indeed!" Chilcote's answer was absent. The constable's cheery voice jarred on him, and for the second time he was conscious of senseless irritation. Without a further glance at the man, he slipped out into the court-yard and turned towards the main gate. At the gate-way two cab lamps showed through the mist of shifting fog like the eyes of a great cat, and the familiar "Hansom, sir?" came to him indistinctly.

Perhaps this stoicism was the outcome of an innate power to endure; perhaps it was a merely negative quality illustrating the lack of that doubtful blessing, imagination. Whatever its origin it stood him in good stead as he covered the long stretch of flat country that links the southeastern seaport of Muskeere with the remote fishing village of Carrigmore and its outlying district of Orristown. His outlook upon Ireland, like his outlook upon life, was untinged by humor. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Irish author Katherine Cecil Thurston's book The Masquerader was originally released in 1904. After the fog-filled night, Chilcote awoke at nine in the morning and watched his man Allsopp sneak across the room, setting the salver and his early cup of tea on the table next to the bed. Since the time he woke up, it had lingered with a hazy persistence, but in the bright morning light, it appeared to stand out with an even greater oddity. Loder first encountered the bitterness of life painfully on the night Chilcote returned to his house. The fact that sentimentality had no place in the man's temperament was indicative of his character. Though they were hidden, sentiments were present, but he outright rejected sentimentalities. Due an unfortunate circumstance, Lillian Astrupp was escorted into the morning room at Grosvenor Square where Eve Chilcote had left an accusatory telegram on the bureau. What purpose had Lillian served by spending those alone times? One solution came to Loder's thoughts. Lillian was not the type of lady to pass up an opportunity, no matter how big or small the area was at her disposal.
