Inside a multi-million dollar mansion in the quiet well-to-do Belle Meade area of Nashville, a sixty-something widow is murdered. Unsolved after eight years, no one has the nerve to call this one a cold case, at least not in the presence of the victim's brother, Music City Mayor Harrison Rowe. Still frustrated by the lack of evidence and convinced he knows who the killer is; Mayor Rowe pulls rank and calls in veteran Nashville homicide detective, Sergeant Mike Neal. Rowe is familiar with Sergeant Neal's unique past and he's certain this investigator will have no trouble relating to the case. The mayor's appeal is motivated by his knowledge of Sergeant Neal's most recent assignment. A young attorney was murdered near his home in Brentwood. The early stages of Sergeant Neal's investigation have produced a person of interest, Nashville financial advisor Barrett Stone, who was the son of Mayor Rowe's sister's fiance and the man Rowe is convinced killed his sister. The morning following Sergeant Neal's initial interview with Barrett Stone, the offices of Stone Asset Management, as well as all client investment accounts, are found empty. Initial investigations uncover reliable evidence that Barrett Stone has left the country with a new identity and forty-five million dollars. Mayor Rowe, guided by this knowledge and desiring revenge even more than justice, charges Sergeant Neal with one solitary assignment. Find Barrett Stone, and bring him back to Nashville to FACE THE MUSIC.
Country Music is Jon Cole's mistress, his first love. He is becoming Nashville's hottest new singer-songwriter on the fast track to Music City stardom. But, he's torn. Brooke, his wife of two years wants him to know she has no intention of playing second fiddle or competing for his time and love. She is unyielding and has made it clear she wants his music career dead and buried in his past. Nashville Homicide Sergeant Mike Neal and Detective Cris Vega are up next on rotation when the call comes in. A young woman is found by her husband when he arrives home at 2:30 in the morning. She's been murdered. With the crime scene processed and evidence awaiting analysis, each of the detectives' interviews is producing more suspects for the investigation. They're rapidly discovering Brooke Cole was an obstruction to the designs of more than a few people. Grief-stricken and confused, Jon Cole is demanding to know, "Who killed my wife-and my music?"
When veteran Nashville homicide detective Tim Slater is ambushed and murdered outside a local Music City cafe, the investigative resources of the Nashville Police Department go on high alert, mobilized to track down his killer. During Sergeant Mike Neal's intense investigation he discovers Detective Slater had a six-figure life insurance policy owned not by his wife but by his ex-wife, who has made it clear, this is no one else's business. Two days after Slater's emotional Line of Duty funeral, Sergeant Neal is pursuing leads in his investigation when he receives a call from Detective Slater's widow stating she's discovered a small digital recorder in her husband's personal items at home. She tells Neal she's certain he'll want to hear what's on it. The recorder's revealing message compels Sergeant Neal to visit Detective Slater's retired former partner whose personal revelations on a three year old closed case set in motion a high-velocity roller coaster ride that drives the investigation toward Slater's killer and a shocking disclosure no one could have predicted.
