Lania Knight's debut collection There Is Fire Here includes fifteen striking personal essays that span nearly a lifetime. Knight left home at sixteen on the back of a motorbike and never looked back. Her writing examines questions of parenthood, fidelity and promiscuity, private and public violence, gender identity, and why and how we write. In these essays, we see what it means to escape and to find ourselves caught in a cycle of coercion and abuse. Transformation comes slow and dear, but Knight's writing shines in the heart of the fire, where the self emerges unbroken and true.
This is a story about the body, how it can be broken, and yet we go on, we heal. Theo Williamson lives in Springfield, Missouri, an unfriendly town for gay teenagers. His family has good intentions, but Theo's father is recovering from a car accident, Theo's stepmother won't leave him alone, and his best friend isn't interested in becoming his boyfriend. When violence erupts in Theo's life, he must decide what he's willing to fight for and how far he'll go for the people he loves.
