Targeted drug delivery (TDD) is a process of delivering medication to a specific site like infected organ, tissue or cell. It comprises engineered technologies for the targeted delivery and controlled release of therapeutic agents. It is extensively used in the treatment of cancerous tumors. TDD is also beneficial in treating some other diseases, including cardiovascular diseases and diabetes. It aims to target, localize, prolong and have a protected drug interaction with the diseased tissue. There are various advantages of TDD, which include having a more uniform effect of the drug, reduction in the frequency of the dosages taken by the patient, reduced fluctuation in circulating drug levels, and reduction of drug side-effects. Different approaches, evaluations and advanced studies on targeted drug delivery have been included in this book. It aims to serve as a resource guide for students and researchers alike and contribute to the evolution of research on this area of study.
Drug delivery comprises formulations, approaches, manufacturing techniques, storage technologies and systems that are involved in the transportation of a pharmaceutical compound towards the targeted site in order to attain the required therapeutic response. It is focused on changing the specificity and pharmacokinetics of the drugs through the formulation of different medical devices, drug carriers and excipients. Furthermore, it places additional weight on enhancing the duration of action and bioavailability of drugs to enhance the therapeutic outcomes. Drug delivery encompasses targeted delivery, controlled-release formulations, drug carriers, 3D printing, nanomedicine, as well as delivery of biologic drugs. The principles associated with the preparation of drugs, route administration, toxicity, metabolism and site specific targeting help in the synthesis, characterization and applications of drug delivery. They are utilized for optimizing safety and efficacy for improvement of patient compliance and convenience. This book includes some of the vital pieces of work being conducted across the world, on various topics related to the synthesis, characterization and applications of drug delivery. It is a resource guide for experts as well as students.
Drug delivery system refers to the creation of a device which enables a therapeutic substance to reach a selected location in the human body without targeting the healthy tissues, cells and organs. It is a wide area of research which is related to the development of various new carrier systems and materials to be used in the delivery of drugs for efficient treatment. The novel systems of drug delivery are focused on providing sustained drug delivery with better body distribution, avoidance of drug clearance, and drug protection from harsh external environment. Furthermore, it comprises of polymeric, lipidic and proteic technologies. The evolution of nanomaterials for drug delivery, known as nano-drug delivery systems (NDDSs), provides the opportunity to avoid the side effects of systemic drug administration and injury caused by the removal of tumors. This book on advances in drug delivery is a collective contribution of a renowned group of international experts. It traces significant advances in drug delivery systems. The book is an invaluable source of reference for medical practitioners, students, scientists, and researchers.
