The Student Book version of The Grammar Graduate's Parts of Speech resource is a consumable workbook. Buy one Teacher's Key with Student Book and enough Student Books for your class or home-schooled children. Teach your child. Teach your class.
This book is for teachers and school teams to use with older students, grades 5 to 10, who do not automatically thrill to the conventions of schooling. The program is designed to communicate the expectations of the classroom - behavioral and academic - so that kids can have the most success as possible in school. Laurie Boyd has led an effective urban middle school for more than 15 years. Her multi-leveled school-wide discipline system provides support for every student, from those who value appropriate behavior to those who can hardly contain their rage or despair. Her system enables every teacher to perform effectively as a classroom manager. The lessons this school staff has learned by keeping their hardest kids in school, in their on-site alternative program, has enabled them to implement highly effective interventions for struggling students, including a successful summer program for maximum promotion of students and this Success in School program for helping all students to start the school year with momentum. Writing procedures, rules, and consequences in a handbook is only a small part of implementing a school-wide system of behavioral supports. The way you communicate those expectations and hold kids accountable to them determines how well they work for you. This is just one way to communicate a school-wide system of expectations to help every child become successful. You may not be able to use it exactly as we designed it for our school, but it will give you ideas for creating your own approach to proactive intervention with your students.
The Grammar Graduate's Parts of Speech provides just the right amount of grammar for acquiring Academic English. Each lesson is short and easy, with practice exercises and a quiz. The Teacher's Key is easy to follow and contains additional details for instruction. Many of my students use language structures that are not Academic English. I wanted a grammar text that directly addresses these common non-academic usages without disparaging my students' home language. I wanted to prepare my students to code-switch more easily between their cultural expressions of language and the "cash" language of careers and higher education. This book directly addresses these non-academic usages in straight-forward notices included in each lesson. For example, embedded in the lesson on pronouns are the following notices: "Please note: 'mines' is not used as a pronoun in Academic English. Use 'mine' instead." "Please note: 'theirselves' is not a word in Academic English. Use 'themselves' instead." Also included in this book is an article called How to Use Your Knowledge of the Parts of Speech to Improve Your Writing Today! These two features alone make this workbook a unique and highly useful resource for applying, as well as learning, the parts of speech. Parts of Speech is the first book in a series of learning materials. Look for Book 2: The Grammar Graduate's Clauses and Phrases, and Book 3: The Grammar Graduate's Sensible Sentences to further your study of Academic English. The Grammar Graduate's Parts of Speech is suitable for grades 5 through adults.
