After their infamous 'March to the Sea', General William Tecumseh Sherman and his 62,000 man army occupied Savannah during December 1864 - January 1865. Sherman took as his army headquarters the mansion of Englishman Charles Green on Madison Square. Against this historical backdrop the novel introduces a young war widow, Belle Anderson, who becomes the general's willing mistress. She discovers true sexual freedom and something else -- a bordello operator who stalks her at night and threatens to expose the affair. "Sherman's Mistress" interweaves the fictional story with many historical characters of the period, including Secretary of War Edwin Stanton, Savannah Mayor Richard Arnold, diarist Fanny Yates Cohen, blockade runner Gazaway Lamar, Major Henry Hitchcock, and Union Generals John Geary and Jefferson C. Davis.

  • - An alternative outcome to the Civil War

It is November 1864 and General Sherman's army is marching through Georgia. Sherman has recently burned much of Atlanta and meets very little opposition as his 60,000-man army aims for Savannah. General Hood's Confederate army will soon be defeated in Tennessee by General Thomas's Union forces. General Grant is squeezing the vise he has placed around Petersburg, and the Confederate capital Richmond is threatened. General Lee's troops are demoralized, many shoeless, and some are deserting to return home so they can help feed and protect their families. The South has all but lost the Civil War and leaders on both sides sense the end is near. It is just a matter of time, yet the Confederates do not give up. They are hoping for a miracle. Across the ocean comes a foreign fleet of submarines, promising to save the South from inevitable defeat. Is that possible? What could be their motive? And why do they come at the last hour? This alternative history of how the Civil War ends presents both real and imagined events of that momentous conflict. Alternate Civil War history is now a common genre, with many essays and novels that posit a different ending. A subgroup of this genre invokes time travel to effect a different ending to the war. Out of Time presents my own unique time travel, alternate-outcome scenario. I have also included an Appendix with the actual history for each of the book's two parts. However, if you don't wish to compare the novel's events with what really happened, simply skip the Appendix and enjoy the book for what it is - the story of a different outcome to the Civil War. Out of Time ends with the war's end but gives a hint of the changed future. Just how this alternative outcome affects the characters, and future generations of Americans, will be the tale for another novel. Lawrence Martin

"The whole house shook." Thus begins the novella, What Just Landed in The Villages? Something very strange, on a golf course, in the middle of the night. How did it get there and where did it come from? Is it hostile or friendly? The world goes agog over the object, but for the 125,000 residents of this Florida retirement community, it's just a huge annoyance. All the attention it brings, not to mention the National Guard, interferes with their lifestyle. They just want it to go away, so they can again move freely around The Villages, visit their numerous clubs without impediment, and not worry about the masses trying to invade their community. In the end, how will it all end? Following the novella are eleven of Martin's short stories, several of them prizewinners in the annual Florida Writers Association's Royal Palm Literary Awards (RPLA) competition. Each story has a twist or surprise ending. Read about: a cancer survivor who says he hit a deer driving home from the doctor's office; a wannabe pianist who makes a deal with The You Know Who; a doctor treating an ordinary patient who turns out to be anything but; a Maestro who is full of himself until he hears a young violinist play part of Vivaldi's Four Seasons; a strange patient being treated in a World War I field hospital; a golfer who gets a little too uppity for the golf gods; Big John and Little John, Confederate army buddies, with a very special relationship hidden from their comrades; a member of a writing critique club who is told that his work is no good and can never be published; a young man confronting a beggar in India; a lung disease patient who promises she'll quit smoking; and, a writer who calls on a most unlikely muse to help finish his novel.Rounding out this volume are the beginning chapters of six of Martin's novels, two of which also won RPLA awards. Liberty Street: A Novel of Late Civil War Savannah won 2nd Place in the category of Published Historical Fiction. The Boy Who Dreamed Mount Everest won 2nd Place in the category of Unpublished Middle-Grade Fiction. All of the novels are available on Amazon.

Can women find love during the Civil War?It is early December, 1864. General William Tecumseh Sherman and his 60,000-man army have reached the outskirts of Savannah. Savannah's citizens know Sherman burned Atlanta and that his army devastated much of Georgia in its march to the sea. What will be Savannah's fate? The question weighs heavily on Abigale Tate, 24, who has lost her father and husband in the Civil War. She is despondent and cynical. To the annoyance of her young sister she often plays Chopin's Funeral March on the piano. Her Negro servant Polly offers a remedy: "You need to come to church with me this Sunday, hear our Reverend Simms. His sermon will make you feel better. He's got powerful speaking, he does."Abigale attends Polly's church and meets Reverend Rufus Simms, a free colored and like no other man she's ever encountered. Simms manages to relieve her melancholy and they soon develop a relationship. Thus begins Liberty Street, a complex love story set against the historical backdrop of late Civil War Savannah. Can women find love during the Civil War? For Abigale Tate and her family, the answer is the story of Liberty Street.Excerpts from Amazon 5-star reviews, for the Kindle edition: "Liberty Street is a well-written historical romance with all the bells and whistles one looks for to keep turning the pages to the dramatic conclusion.""Very engaging story of a woman making the best of her life while going through tragic times during the latter part of the Civil War... I loved it.""Just finished the book. The characters in this story come alive like Wow. Kept my interest throughout.""Great historical novel...Well done."
