Lester del Rey was surely one of science fiction's most happily argumentative representatives, an authority on a variety of subjects far too wide to list, and with a command of language, agility of mind, and the total confidence to pass as an authority on any subject. In an odd way, this is what science fiction is all about-the ability to convince the reader, or the listener, of the absolute reality of total impossibilities. But of course, one needs more than gall, a good mind, and command of the langugae. One needs talent, and professionalism, and experience-three qualities that add up to the controlled power which is the key to the finest of Lester del Rey's writing.Of which these five stories from the Golden Age of Science Fiction are a prime example: "Vengeance is Mine," "Superstition," "Life Watch," "For I Am a Jealous People," and "Pursuit."

The story of the "Badge of Infamy" is set in the future where powerful unions called lobbies control much of society. One of the most powerful lobbies is the medical lobby, which following a pandemic that spread across earth, has required all medicine from being practiced only by authorized lobby members and only in approved lobby facilities. Daniel Feldman was once a doctor but has now become a pariah due to his breach of these rules. Trying to escape the shame he travels to Mars, where he discovers a disaster threatening billions of lives. In "The Sky Is Falling" Computer engineer Dave Hanson is transported from Earth to a world where the rules of science and physics are replaced by the rules of magic. Hanson was summoned to help save the world's sky from collapsing. The sky is a literal dome that arches above the world, with the sun and stars not massive celestial bodies trillions of miles away, but smaller lights that move about within the dome of the sky. Hanson must find a way to reconcile his scientific knowledge with the magic of his new world and thus prevent the sky from falling.
Pursuit: Wilbur Hawkes wakes from a coma after seven months with total amnesia. He can't remember of anything. Only thing he realizes that his life is in danger. Wilbur is running through New York not knowing where to go. When he sees heat rays, disintegrating men, and exploding cats things become horrifying... Victory: It seemed Earth was a rich and undefended planet in a warring, hating galaxy. Things can be deceptive though; children playing can be quite rough -- but that ain't war, friend!

Caring with himself nothing but a knife he has only one order, to police the Red Planet!
Eighteen men and two women in the closed world of a space ship for five months can only spell tension and trouble-but in this case, the atmosphere was literally poisoned.
In "The Sky Is Falling," Lester del Rey masterfully weaves a narrative that merges science fiction with deep psychological insights, exploring the themes of survival and human resilience in the face of cataclysmic change. Set against a backdrop of an impending alien invasion, del Rey intricately develops a storyline that is both suspenseful and thought-provoking, reflecting the anxieties of the Cold War era. The prose is characterized by its accessibility, yet it is imbued with a certain depth that invites readers to ponder the implications of humanity's relationship with technology and the unknown. Lester del Rey, a prominent figure in the science fiction genre, played a pivotal role in shaping modern speculative fiction through his editorial work and original storytelling. His vast experience in publishing and his deep interest in science informed his writing, enabling him to approach complex topics with clarity and imagination. Del Rey's life experiences, especially those that drew from war and technological exuberance, resonate throughout this work, prompting reflections on societal fears and moral dilemmas embedded in human progress. This book is highly recommended for readers who appreciate science fiction that challenges conventional narratives and encourages contemplation of societal constructs. "The Sky Is Falling" not only entertains but also serves as an essential commentary on the fragility of civilization and the innate human spirit's tenacity, making it a must-read for students of literature and enthusiasts of speculative fiction alike.
