"Color of my Skin" was written as a result of current events in the world today. It poetically points out the problems in society from a Black person's perspective. It also recognizes the struggles, hardships, and successes, encompassing the good and the bad of what's happening within Black communities today. Author Liz Baker wrote "Color of my Skin" not as a judgment against anyone, but to acknowledge the facts of past and current events in the lives of: Families who've lost loved ones and received no justice; the few Families that have received justice; Children who were never taught their history; People who are statistically stuck where they are; and for those who are willing to listen.
