Frank Rignold too was a son of Bridgeport, and the sea which ran in that blood for generations bade him in manhood to rise and follow it. He had gone into the engine-room, and at thirty was the chief engineer of a cargo boat running to South American ports. He was a fine-looking man with earnest grey eyes; a reader, a student, an observer; self-taught in Spanish, Latin, and French; a grave, quiet gentlemanly man, whose rare smile seemed to light his whole face, and who in his voyages South had caught something of Spanish grace and courtliness. He returned as regularly to Bridgeport as his ship did to New York; and when he stepped off the train his eager steps took him first to the Fenacres' house, his hands never empty of some little present for his sweetheart.

It was two o'clock in the afternoon, and from her uneasy anchorage in the pass the German man-of-war struck the time, four bells. Overhead the sun shone fiercely through a mist of fire; below, the bay gave back a dancing glare; on the outer reef the long breakers foamed and tumbled, white as far as the eye could reach. From his perch beneath the bows of the Northern Light a sailor, paint brush in hand, was slowly wearing out the day-a brown-bearded, straight-nosed, handsome man of thirty, his red shirt open to the waist, his bare arms stained with the drippings of his brush. Astride of his plank, which hung suspended in midair by a block and tackle at either end, the seaman faced the task that seemed to have no end. For a week he had been at it, patch by patch, working his way round the bark, while the bells had struck on the man-of-war and the sun had risen and set.

The Ebb-Tide a trio and Quartette is written by two authors who are Robert Louis Stevenson and his stepson Lloyd Osbourne. The book came out the year Stevenson passed away. In Tahiti's port city of Papeete, there are three beggars at work. They are Huish, a dishonest Cockney with several jobs, Herrick, a failing English businessman, Davis, an embittered American sea captain, and Herrick. One day, a champagne-carrying schooner sailing from San Francisco to Sydney off course lands in port with its crew members dead from smallpox. The American consul hires Davis to take charge of the ship for the duration of its journey because no one else is ready to take a chance on getting sick. Davis introduces the other two guys with a plan to take the ship, sail it to Peru, sell the cargo and ship, and then vanish with the proceeds. Once at sea, Davis and Huish begin consuming the cargo and are drunk virtually the entire time. Herrick, who has no prior experience at sea and whose conscience is much unsettled by the scheme but feels he has no other means to escape poverty, is left on his own to oversee the ship.
