The "Spiritual Combat" is one of the many rich fruits of the Cross, from which comes every good gift and every grace to us, all spiritual wisdom as well as holiness. And perhaps of all the branches of that Tree, none has born choicer gifts than shocking calumny, for zeal and righteousness' sake, meekly endured in silence. It does seem to give a special likeness and conformity to our Lord, when holiness in His servants draws upon them the hatred of the world, and they too, in Him and for Him, are "hated without a cause," and drink of His Cup, in that they (reverently to use the words) are with Him, and for His sake "numbered with the transgressors." In patient retirement, under some shocking calumny, which ranked its author among the carnal and the degraded, the "Spiritual Combat" was written. Father Scupoli lists four essentials in the Spiritual Combat: Mistrust of self, trust in God, Spiritual exercises and finally prayer. "In this conflict, my daughter, so necessary to thee is mistrust of self, that unless thou be furnished with it, thou wilt assuredly be unable not only to gain the victory, but even to overcome thy very slightest passion." In this age of ego-centricity, we believe we can do anything, forgetting the necessity of trusting in Almighty God rather than in our own feeble efforts. Father Scupoli warns us of two dangers, ignorance and curiosity. "One is ignorance, which clouds and obstructs the knowledge of truth, the proper object of the understanding. Therefore must it be made clear and bright by exercise, that so it may be able to see and discern plainly all that is needful for purifying the soul from unruly passions, and adorning it with saintly virtues." In order to combat lust Father Scupoli advises; "Avoid idleness, and be vigilant and awake, with the thoughts and deeds suitable to thy state of life." In order to avoid the vice of sloth: "Thou must avoid all curiosity concerning earthly things, and all attachment to them, and also every kind of employment which belongs not to thy condition." "THE cunning and malignant serpent fails not to tempt us by his artifice, even through the very virtues to which we have attained, that they may become an occasion of ruin to us, while we, regarding them and ourselves with complacency, lift up ourselves on high, thereby to fall afterward into the sin of pride and vain-glory. To keep thyself from this danger, ever fight, placing thyself in the safe and level field of a true and deep knowledge that thou art nothing, that thou knowest nothing, that thou canst do nothing, and hast nothing but miseries and defects, and deservest nothing but eternal damnation." In the supplement we read: "Christian perfection is nothing else but a full observance of the precepts and law of God in order to please Him, without going aside to the right hand or to the left, or turning back. " For this is the whole duty of man." So that the aim of the whole life of the Christian who wills to become perfect, must be a striving to form the habit of daily forgetting self more and more, and accustoming himself not to do his own will, that so he may do all things as moved thereto by the sole Will of God, in order to please and honour Him." The end of this work is devoted to the Path to Paradise. "Let every thing be a means of leading thee to God, and let nothing hinder thee on the way."

The Spiritual Combat by Lorenzo Scupoli is a practical guide to the spiritual life, with a message centered on humility, and a goal to defeat individual passions. The author begins the process with self-evaluation and identifying our internal weaknesses. He then provides us with the methods to battle these shortcomings and guard against our own evil inclinations. In 1589, the first edition of Il combattimento spirituale (The Spiritual Combat) appeared and contained thirty-three chapters. But Scupoli continued to add to the text, and it gradually grew into the current version containing sixty-six chapters. Since its introduction, four centuries ago, approximately six hundred editions have been published globally. Scriptoria Books has transcribed this edition word for word from the original text. It was then edited, formatted, typeset, and proofread through each revision. Our procedures are not automated. Our editions are not facsimiles and do not contain OCR interpreted text. Our books are carefully created new editions of classic works.

The Peace of the Soul and the Happiness of the Heart By Catholic Author, Lorenzo Scupoli CHAPTER I. Of the nature of man's heart, and the manner of governing it. God created the heart of man to no other end than to love Him, and be beloved by Him again. The excellence of this end of the creation ought to convince us that it is the most noble and most excellent work of His almighty hand. On the government of this alone, depends our spiritual life and death. The art of governing it must need be very easy, since its true character is to act through love, and to do nothing by force. All we have to do is to watch with great calmness, the true spirit of our actions. To observe from whence they spring and whither they tend. Whether they are actuated by the heart, the source of divine love; or by the understanding, from whence arises human vain glory. You will discover that it is the heart which influences you in your good works, through a motive of love, when all you do for God seems little, and after doing your best, you are ashamed of having done so little. But you may conclude, that your actions proceed from the understanding, moved by worldly motives when your good works, instead of producing meek and humble sentiments, leave nothing behind them, but the empty illusions of vain glory, puffing you up with a false notion of having performed wonders, when in fact you have done nothing that is praiseworthy. Man's warfare mentioned by Job, consists in watching thus continually over ourselves. This is to be performed without the least peevishness or anxiety; for what is aimed at is to give peace to the soul, to calm and appease its motions, when troubled or disturbed in its operations or prayers. For we may be assured, in such a condition, prayers will be very indifferently said, till the soul be freed from all uneasiness. Know that this may be affected by a single emotion of mildness, which is the only means of remedying this disorder and restoring her former tranquillity. CHAPTER II. How careful the soul ought to be in acquiring perfect tranquillity. This mild, peaceable, and especially constant attention to all the motions of the heart will easily produce wonderful effects; for we shall not only pray and act with great facility and peace, but even suffer without repining, what occasions the greatest disturbances, contempt and injuries themselves. Not but that to acquire this external peace we must necessarily undergo much labor, and our want of experience will expose us to the assaults of powerful domestic enemies. But this we may depend upon that if we are not afraid of the encounter, we never shall want assistance and consolation in this combat; that our enemies will grow weaker and their powers be dispersed, whereas our command over our affections will increase, and we shall procure for our souls that precious repose in which their happiness on this side the grave alone consists.
