Une corporation de chandeliers fut établie en France vers 1016, sous le roi Philippe Ier, et régularisée vers 1470. La lanterne fut imaginée vers les premiers temps du Moyen âge. C'était une enveloppe de métal, pourvue d'une lame transparente de corne et renfermant une chandelle ou une petite lampe. Les lanternes se fabriquaient chez les peigniers-tabletiers, qui avaient le privilège de travailler la corne. Les lanternes se portaient à la main. Quelques-unes étaient placées, pendant la nuit, sous une statuette de la Vierge, à la porte de certains couvents. On ne pouvait songer à les placer aux coins des rues, pour dissiper les ténèbres de la nuit, car les voleurs et larrons n'auraient pas tardé à faire disparaître ces indiscrets témoins et dénonciateurs de leurs crimes et méfaits. Sous Louis XI, le prévôt avait fait commandement aux Parisiens, par ordre du roi, d'avoir armures dans leurs maisons, de faire le guet dessus les murailles, de mettre flambeaux ardents et lanternes aux carrefours des rues et aux fenêtres des maisons. Mais cette ordonnance était restée sans effet. Quelques promenades du guet, plutôt disposé à demander grâce aux voleurs qu'à les poursuivre, voilà tout ce qu'on faisait, au XVIIe siècle, pour la sécurité des rues de la capitale pendant la nuit..."
