Officially designated as the Medium Tank, M3 was the first US medium tank to be mass-produced. It was conceived and designed around 1940 and became operational in 1941. Its turret was made in two variants, one according to US specifications and the other modified to meet British requirements, in this case including the placement of the radio next to the commander. In the context of the British Commonwealth, the tank acquired two distinct designations: those with US-model turrets were called 'Lee', in homage to Confederate General Robert E. Lee, while those with British-model turrets were identified as 'Grant', in honor of Union General Ulysses S. Grant, the two greatest and most famous American generals of the Civil War.

Ufficialmente designato come Medium Tank, M3, fu il primo carro armato medio statunitense ad essere fabbricato in grande serie. Venne ideato e progettato intorno al 1940 e divenne operativo nel 1941. La sua torretta venne realizzata in due varianti, una conformemente alle specifiche degli Stati Uniti e l'altra modificata per soddisfare i requisiti britannici, includendo in questo caso, la collocazione della radio accanto al comandante. Napoleon introduced the concept of all arms Corps, each one a traditional army 'in miniature', permitting the field force to be split across several lines of march and rejoin or to operate independently. The Grande Armée operated by seeking a decisive battle with each enemy army and then destroying them in detail before rapidly occupying territory and forcing a peace.

Il carro M11/39, fu il carro armato di transizione tra il crro veloce L3 e l'M 13/40. L'M11/39 può essere considerato il primo carro medio italiano, con un peso di 11 tonnellate e l'armamento che era composto da un cannone da 37 mm in casamatta e da due mitragliatrici Breda Mod. 38 8 mm in torretta. Uno dei punti deboli era il motore di bassa potenza, del cannone posto in casamatta e della mancanza di apparecchiature radio. Poco adatto alla guerra del deserto. Nonostante le sue debolezze, l'M11/39 rappresentò un importante passo avanti nella storia dei corazzati italiani, in quanto aprì la strada alla famiglia dei carri armati medi, utilizzati per tutta la guerra.

In questo primo volume dedicato alle autoblinde italiane, iniziamo a presentare le prime e più antiche. All'inizio si trattò soprattutto di modelli rimasti a livello di prototipi, o di mezzi prodotti in numero assai basso. Delle tante, abbiamo dedicato un po' di spazio alle blindo più antiche come la Bianchi, già presente nel conflitto italo-turca, o la Fiat-Terni Tripoli nata nel 1918. Passiamo poi alla leggenda della Lancia 1Z, mezzo fortunato nato nel primo conflitto mondiale e che rimase operativo fino al 1945! Si trattò di un massiccio mezzo, interamente di progettazione italiana. A condividere buona parte del libro chiudiamo con l'autoblindo Fiat 611 costruita nel 1932, come spesso accadeva al tempo con la Ansaldo, e specificatamente progettata per uso coloniale. Operò infatti soprattutto nella A.O.I. insieme alla sorella più anziana Lancia 1Z e i carri veloci. Oltre venti tavole di profili a colori dell'autore completano questo libro.

In this first volume devoted to Italian armoured cars, we begin by presenting the earliest and oldest ones. In the beginning, these were mainly models that remained at prototype level, or vehicles produced in very low numbers. Of the many, we have devoted some space to the oldest blindos such as the Bianchi, which was already present in the Italo-Turkish conflict, or the Fiat-Terni Tripoli born in 1918. We then move on to the legend of the Lancia 1Z, a successful vehicle that was born in the First World War and remained operational until 1945! It was a massive vehicle, entirely of Italian design. To share much of the book we close with the Fiat 611 armoured car built in 1932, as was often the case with Ansaldo at the time, and specifically designed for colonial use. It operated mainly in the A.O.I. together with its older sister Lancia 1Z and fast tanks. Over twenty plates of colour profiles by the author complete this book.

The M11/39 tank was the transitional tank between the L3 fast tank and the M 13/40. The M11/39 can be considered the first Italian medium tank, with a weight of 11 tonnes and armament that consisted of a 37 mm cannon in the casemate and two Breda Mod. 38 8 mm machine guns in the turret. One of the weak points was the low-powered engine, the cannon placed in the casemate and the lack of radio equipment. Unsuitable for desert warfare. Despite its weaknesses, the M11/39 represented an important step forward in the history of Italian armoured vehicles, as it paved the way for the medium tank family, which was used throughout the war.

Durante la Seconda guerra mondiale, l'Ungheria schierò diverse unità di carri armati per supportare gli sforzi bellici dell'Asse. L'esercito ungherese utilizzò principalmente due tipi di carri armati durante il conflitto: il Toldi e il Turán in diverse varianti. Il Toldi era un carro armato leggero ungherese, sviluppato negli anni '30. Si trattava di un carro agile e adatto per compiti di ricognizione e supporto delle truppe. Il Turán fu il primo carro armato ungherese prodotto in serie. Era basato sul telaio del carro armato cecoslovacco LT vz. 38. Tuttavia, la corazza leggera rendeva questi carri vulnerabili ai colpi nemici. Furono impiegati principalmente sul fronte orientale contro l'Unione Sovietica.

The Messerschmitt BF 109, also known as the ME 109, was perhaps the most famous fighter aircraft of the Luftwaffe. Developed during the first half of the 1930s by Wilhelm Messerschmitt and Robert Lusser. This fantastic fighter aircraft was characterised by its all-metal monocoque structure, an enclosed cabin, a fixed landing gear and a V-shaped aircraft engine with 12 inverted, water-cooled cylinders. The first examples of the Bf 109 appeared during the Spanish Civil War and remained in service until the end of the Second World War. During this period, the Bf 109 aircraft formed the main fighter force of the German Air Force. Towards the end of 1941, the Bf 109 was joined by the Focke-Wulf FW 190 aircraft. Together, they were a formidable pair of aircraft, a real nightmare for the Allies.

The Russian T-26 was a light tank, designed for infantry support, produced in the Soviet Union from 1931. It did not originate as an autonomous design, but was mainly derived from the British Vickers 6-ton or Vickers Type E vehicle. The T-26 tanks were armed with two parallel turrets in the centre of the hull, each equipped with a light machine gun. The next step was to install a 27-mm or 37-mm cannon on one turret. This was replaced by a 45 mm piece, and this increased the armour-piercing and explosive power. Known as the Mod. 1933, it was a great success and was produced, alone, in around 5,500 examples; an exceptional run for the time. Versions derived from the T-26 were: the OT-26 flamethrower with a flamethrower instead of a cannon, the OT-33 which had both, the ST-26 bridge-carrier to give tank divisions the necessary mobility against natural obstacles, the T-26 A-4 (U) railing radio command tank, and many others...

Il Messerschmitt BF 109, moto anche come ME 109, fu forse il più famoso aereo da caccia della Luftwaffe. Sviluppato durante la prima metà degli anni '30 da Wilhelm Messerschmitt e Robert Lusser. Questo fantastico aereo da caccia si caratterizzava per la sua struttura monoscocca completamente in metallo, una cabina chiusa, un carrello d'atterraggio fisso e un motore aeronautico a forma di V con 12 cilindri invertiti, raffreddati ad acqua. I primi esemplari del Bf 109 fecero la loro comparsa già durante la guerra civile spagnola e rimasero in servizio fino alla fine della seconda guerra mondiale. Durante questo periodo, gli aerei Bf 109 costituirono la principale forza dei caccia dell'aeronautica tedesca. Verso la fine del 1941, il Bf 109 fu affiancato dall'aereo Focke-Wulf FW 190. Insieme, furono una coppia di mezzi formidabile, vero incubo degli alleati.

This is the story of the Blue Baron, born Carlo Luigi Amedeo Winspeare Guicciardi and his active participation in the Second World War as a pilot officer in the Regia Aeronautica. But let us take two steps back. Carlo Winspeare, son of Edoardo and Clara Sarauw, was born on 13 March 1917 in Valletta (Malta) where his father, who had travelled the world in the retinue of Luigi Amedeo di Savoia, the adventurous Duke of the Abruzzi, was working as an attaché militaire, as an officer in the Regia Marina. Don't be fooled by the name that betrays English origins, the Blue Baron was a true Italian hero. With his military flights, he took part in numerous reconnaissance and reckless war missions, one of the best known of which was certainly the Battle of Mid-August on 12-13 August 1942, pompously commemorated by the regime as the 20th year of the fascist era. In this book, the author recounts all these adventures!

Il T-26 russo fu un carro armato leggero, pensato da supporto alla fanteria, prodotto in Unione Sovietica a partire dal 1931. Esso non nacque come un progetto autonomo, ma derivò principalmente dal mezzo britannico Vickers 6-ton o Vickers Type E. I carri armati T-26 erano armati di due torrette parallele al centro dello scafo, e dotate di una mitragliatrice leggera ciascuna. Il passo successivo fu quello di installare, su una torretta, un cannone da 27 mm o da 37 mm. Il pezzo venne sostituito da uno da 45 mm, e questo aumentò la potenza perforante ed esplosiva. Noto come Mod. 1933, ebbe un grande successo, e venne prodotto, da solo, in circa 5.500 esemplari; una tiratura eccezionale per l'epoca. Versioni derivate dal T-26 furono: il lanciafiamme OT-26 con lanciafiamme al posto del cannone, l'OT-33 che aveva sia uno che l'altro, il gettaponte ST-26 per conferire ai reparti carri l'indispensabile mobilità nei riguardi degli ostacoli naturali, il carro comando, munito di radio a ringhiera T-26 A-4 (U) e molti altri...

Dopo il primo volume sui cannoni italiani, in questa seconda parte tratteremo e completeremo lo studio e l'analisi dei pezzi d'artiglieria ereditati dal primo conflitto mondiale, sia di produzione nazionale che fonti di preda bellica (tipicamente austro-ungarica) a seguito della vittoria nel 1915-18.Il criterio usato sarà ancora quello già utilizzato del calibro a crescere, quindi dai pezzi leggeri in poi. Con il terzo volume che completerà il nostro lavoro sulle artiglierie italiane dei primi cinquanta anni del Novecento tratteremo prevalentemente i mezzi di concezione più moderna, ideati dalla seconda metà degli anni '30. Da questo volume invece parleremo espressamente anche delle bombarde in uso in quegli anni, mentre trattrici e trattori saranno distribuiti in vario modo nei tre volumi in ordine preferibilmente cronologico.

The Matilda Mk II tank, was an infantry tank used by the British Army during the Second World War. This tank was famous for its heavy armour and its ability to resist enemy attacks, especially in the early stages of the conflict. In fact, its armour made it virtually invulnerable to the anti-tank guns of the time. On the other hand, its speed and firepower were limited compared to the enemy tanks. It was armed with a 2-pound (40 mm) main gun and a coaxial machine gun. For all these characteristics, the British Matilda tank was nicknamed "the Queen of the Desert"!

After the first volume on Italian cannons, in this second part we will treat and complete the study and analysis of the artillery pieces inherited from the First World War, both of national production and sources of war prey (typically Austro-Hungarian) following the victory in 1915-18.The criterion used will still be that of the growing calibre, i.e. from light pieces onwards. With the third volume, which will complete our work on Italian artillery from the first fifty years of the twentieth century, we will mainly deal with the more modern types of artillery, conceived from the second half of the 1930s. From this volume we will also expressly discuss the bombards in use in those years, while tractors will be distributed in various ways throughout the three volumes in preferably chronological order.

Il carro armato Matilda Mk II fu un carro armato di fanteria utilizzato dall'Esercito Britannico durante la Seconda Guerra Mondiale. Questo carro era famoso per la sua pesante corazza e la sua capacità di resistere agli attacchi nemici, soprattutto nelle fasi iniziali del conflitto. La sua corazza, infatti, lo rendeva praticamente invulnerabile ai cannoni anticarro dell'epoca. Per contro, la sua velocità e la sua capacità di fuoco erano limitate rispetto ai carri avversari. Era armato di un cannone principale da 2 libbre (40 mm) e una mitragliatrice coassiale. Per tutte queste caratteristiche il carro inglese Matilda era soprannominato "la regina del deserto"!

Il Panzerkampfwagen 38(t) non nasce tedesco. Il suo nome originale era LT vz. 38, ed era il miglior carro armato cecoslovacco realizzato tra le due guerre. Ebbe però fortuna e sostanziale utilizzo solo in un altro esercito, quello tedesco che ribattezzò il mezzo Pz.Kpfw.38(t). Nella Wehrmacht, questo carro armato divenne uno dei simboli della Blitzkrieg, combattendo nell'avanguardia delle unità corazzate tedesche. Fu quindi così che nella primavera del 1940, i carri armati costruiti a Praga distrussero i veicoli britannici e francesi che due anni prima non erano riusciti a venire in aiuto della Cecoslovacchia...

The Panzerkampfwagen 38(t) was not born German. Its original name was LT vz. 38, and was the best Czechoslovak tank made between the wars. However, it only had luck and substantial use in another army, the German army, which renamed the vehicle Pz.Kpfw.38(t). In the Wehrmacht, this tank became one of the symbols of the Blitzkrieg, fighting in the vanguard of the German armoured units. Thus it was that in the spring of 1940, the Prague-built tanks destroyed the British and French vehicles that had failed to come to the aid of Czechoslovakia two years earlier...

During the Second World War, Hungary deployed several tank units to support the Axis war effort. The Hungarian army mainly used two types of tanks during the conflict: the Toldi and the Turán in different variants. The Toldi was a Hungarian light tank developed in the 1930s. It was an agile tank suitable for reconnaissance and troop support tasks. The Turán was the first mass-produced Hungarian tank. It was based on the chassis of the Czechoslovak LT vz. 38. However, the light armour made these tanks vulnerable to enemy hits. They were mainly used on the Eastern Front against the Soviet Union.
