Endlich angelangt an der Hauptstation ¿ endlich dort, wohin alle Wege seines Lebens gewiesen hatten! »Also das ist Rom ¿ das wirkliche Rom?« rief die junge Frau mit lustiger Ungläubigkeit, während der Zug langsam in die erleuchtete Halle hineinrollte. »Ja, das ist es!« Seine Stimme zitterte vor Rührung und Erregung; er versuchte, die ungeheuere Bedeutung dieses Augenblickes ganz in sich zu erfassen. »Du . . . aber der Bahnhof ist nichts weniger als pompös.« »Roma ¿ Roma!« schrieen die Schaffner und rissen die Coupéthüren auf. Obwohl sie nun schon mehrere Wochen unterwegs waren, bemerkte er doch jetzt zum erstenmal, wie merkwürdig viel Handgepäck sie mit sich führte. Es dauerte eine hübsche Weile, bis der Facchino die bunte Sammlung von Köfferchen, Kisten, Schachteln und Schächtelchen ausgeladen hatte. »Fehlt auch nichts?« fragte sie, sorgfältige Musterung haltend. Dann, als er ihr den Arm geboten hatte und in ernstem Schweigen mit ihr dem Ausgang zuschritt, ward sie plötzlich inne, daß sie ihr Riechfläschchen im Coupé hatte liegen lassen. Er rannte zurück, suchte in sämtlichen Coupés erster Klasse, da er die Nummer des seinigen sich nicht gemerkt hatte, und kehrte nach fünf Minuten mit hochrotem Gesicht und fliegendem Atem, das Riechfläschchen in der Hand, zu ihr zurück.
