Erfüllten ihn schon die Folgen einer Vergiftung durch ein Tier mit Entsetzen, so musste dasselbe noch grösser sein, wenn er, vorher gesund und kräftig, plötzlich ohne sichtbaren Feind von einer giftigen Krankheit niedergeworfen wurde, die sich in übelriechenden Ausdünstungen und Entleerungen, in eiterigen Ausschlägen und Beulen über den ganzen Körper äusserte.
