En los límites entre el romanticismo y el modernismo, la historia ha consolidado el lugar del mexicano Manuel Gutiérrez Nájera. Poeta y narrador, así como también un fundamental cronista, quien a pesar de pasar toda su vida en la Ciudad de México (salvo breves visitas a Querétaro y Veracruz y alguna temporada en una hacienda familiar de Puebla) saturo la prensa de su país abordando todos los temas, los divinos y humanos. Pero uno de sus mayores intereses fue la preocupación por seguir el curso de las artes escénicas en la capital mexicana y principalmente la música, dentro de la cual valora en especial la ópera. Sumido en el instante del espectáculo, su conclusión lo hace correr para escribir inmediatamente sobre él, pero ambiciona sin embargo lo permanente. En este sentido, la apretada selección de poemas de este volumen nuestra cómo de la vida tenía una versión melodramática y cómo, dotado de opinión, en medio de inestabilidad emocional, reflexiona sobre el arte, la vida y edifica una meditación que va hasta lo estético.
