El doncel de don Enrique el doliente es una novela romántica, cuya trama caballeresca se sitúa en el siglo XV, durante el reinado de Enrique III de Castilla, conocido como el doliente por sus constantes enfermedades. La obra recrea las peripecias de Macías, el eterno trovador enamorado de una dama casada. Los celos del marido provocan la muerte del doncel, comparablemente al mismo autor, que pondría fin a su vida por un fracaso sentimental.
Este libro es una descarnada disección de la España del siglo XIX, de los fallos de un mundo atrapado en el tradicionalismo, cuyas incipientes reformas no alcanzaban sus cimientos más profundos. Larra atacó las costumbres groseras de la España del siglo XIX en (El castellano viejo), la indolencia de los funcionarios (Vuelva usted mañana) o los espectáculos tradicionales (Los toros) e introdujo a veces rasgos de humor que no ocultaron su pesimismo.
