""Radioactive Substances"" is a scientific book written by Marie Curie and published in 1904. The book is a comprehensive study of the physical and chemical properties of radioactive substances, including uranium, thorium, and radium. It also explores the nature of radioactivity, the emission of particles and energy from radioactive substances, and the effects of radiation on living organisms. The book is divided into three sections: the first section provides an introduction to the properties of radioactive substances, the second section focuses on the measurement of radioactivity, and the third section explores the practical applications of radioactivity in medicine, industry, and research. Marie Curie, the author of the book, was a pioneering scientist who made significant contributions to the field of radioactivity. She was the first woman to receive a Nobel Prize in Physics in 1903, and later received a second Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1911 for her work on radium and polonium. ""Radioactive Substances"" is a seminal work in the history of science and remains a valuable resource for anyone interested in the study of radioactivity and its applications. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.

IN HER recent visit to America, Madame Curie conferred a special honor upon Vassar College by delivering in the chapel on the evening of May fourteenth the only extended address which she made in this country. In a simple, straightforward way she told the story of her great achievement. One realized how, closely environed by all the great realities of human experience, in the face of tremendous difficulties and with limited resources, she had pursued undaunted her search for truth. The discovery of radium gave Madame Curie immediate distinction among scientists on account of the extremely significant contribution she thereby made to the great ultimate problem of physical science, the constitution of matter. The striking properties possessed by radium gave to its discovery a world-wide interest, all the more intense because of the hope which was inspired by the possible healing qualities of the radiations from this new element. That hope is being realized in large measure. It is therefore fitting that this address should have been given by Madame Curie at Vassar and that it should now be circulated among the members of the college under the foundation in memory of Ellen S. Richards, who devoted her life to the public health. This Edition comes with the following contents: Prefatory Note ii The Discovery Of Radium iii Introduction. 1 Historical. 4 Chapter I. 6 Radio-Activity Of Uranium And Thorium. Radio-Active Minerals. 6 Chapter II. 26 Method Of Research. 26 Chapter III. Radiation Of The New Radio-Active Substances. 51 Chapter IV. 119 Communication Of Radio-Activity To Substances Initially Inactive. 119 Nature And Cause Of The Phenomena Of Radio-Activity. 16

Pioneering scientist and winner of two Nobel Prizes Marie Curie describes in this interesting firsthand account the painstaking laboratory research that led to her discovery of radium and other radioactive substances. This groundbreaking work in the area of natural radioactivity, done in partnership with her husband, Pierre Curie, proved to be an important milestone in understanding the structure of matter.Born Marie Sklodowska in Warsaw, Poland, she emigrated to Paris at the age of twenty-four and enrolled in the Sorbonne after being refused admission by the University of Warsaw because she was a woman. In France she met her husband, a fellow scientist, and together they conducted the laboratory investigations on radioactive substances that would later make them famous. 1903 was a banner year for both of them. Based on her work with radium she earned a doctorate of science, and their joint research was awarded the Davy Medal from the Royal Society. Then in the same year Marie and Pierre, along with Henri Becquerel, shared the Nobel Prize for Physics for the discovery of radioactivity. When Pierre died tragically in 1906 from an automobile accident, Marie was appointed by the Sorbonne to fill his professorship, and thus she became the first female member of the faculty in the 650-year history of the university. Despite the great loss of her husband and the burden of having to raise two daughters alone, Marie carried on the work that she and Pierre had begun. In 1910, her fundamental treatise on radioactivity was published, and in 1911 she was awarded the Nobel Prize for Chemistry for the isolation of pure radium.Unfortunately, her many years of close work with radioactive substances eventually had deleterious health consequences and finally in 1934 she died of leukemia. This story of her work, told in her own words, reveals a courageous and dedicated scientist who gave everything for the advance of science.
