Vignettes is a collection of poems set in the urban and suburban terrains of San Francisco and Los Angeles, California suburbs and the small towns of the San Joaquin Valley and various imaginary landscapes. Street scenes and trailer parks, doorway beds and dive bars, tech cafes. Gritty bus rides, dystopian humor, whimsey and cold-eyed observation.
A series of 122 beautiful nude portraits of English women linked by a common theme: all were taken using the bare minimum of equipment: either Window light or DIY worklights. Keeping the theme simple allowed both Photographer and subjects to explore the creative possibilities of each location, leading to an inspiring variety in the resulting photographs.
Swimming on Broken Ground is the story of Henry Nalbandian, the son of Armenian immigrants, payroll clerk at the Kern River oil field, and Ruthie Brown, a young African American cleaning woman at the county hospital. They meet on the night of the 1952 Bakersfield earthquake, the third most powerful earthquake in California recorded history. Together they face the disapproval of society against interracial relationships and the violent designs of two men, one a roughneck from the oil fields, and the other a pimp from the African American shanty community of Cottonwood. They embark on a journey into the Sierra Nevada, where they encounter history, both natural and human, and each other. Their story unfolds in a series of forty-one poems.
Have you noticed, either as a doctor or as a patient, how some consultations appear to just run smoothly, and others just do not flow? This book aims to help you identify the factors that govern this: how to identify the difference that makes the difference. This is in the hope that by gaining these insights the practice of consulting, the cornerstone of the practice of medicine, can be increasingly elegant, enjoyable and effective for all concerned. These are essential communication skills, with applicability well beyond just the particular context of the GP consultation.
NACA/NASA Langley's John P. "Jack" Reeder, one of America's first engineering test pilots, test flew 235 types of aircraft/rotorcraft over a 42-year career. He was also the agency's first true helicopter pilot. His test piloting tally remains unsurpassed by no one in the world. Even more remarkable, Reeder remained humble despite his impressive test piloting accomplishments, something extremely rare in an age where most test pilots tended to be "cocky" and "arrogant". Jack always put his family before his career, another highly admirable trait. Jack would always devote plenty of his spare time to share his test piloting stories with the NASA community as well as the public. The NASA Langley community was deeply saddened when Jack's brilliant life was tragically taken from him by the dreaded "memory thief" disease known as Alzheimer's on May 23, 1999. Learn more about this exceptional, unsung hero of aviation history in Mark A. Chambers' Jack Reeder: Test Pilot.
Entering service during the Sino-Japanese War, the Nakajima B5N (code-named 'Kate') excelled and went on to achieve surprising and dramatic successes in the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. It also contributed to the sinking of the US aircraft carriers USS Lexington at the Battle of the Coral Sea, USS Yorktown at the Battle of Midway, and USS Hornet at the Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands. Its replacement, the Nakajima B6N 'Jill', while a marked improvement over its illustrious predecessor, was never able to achieve its full potential in combat due to advances in Allied aircraft, finding itself relegated to the dreaded Kamikaze strikes in the latter part of the war.Using previously unpublished photographs as well as colour illustrations, this book will cover the history of the 'Kate' and 'Jill' torpedo/attack bombers, including their design and development, as well as the combat highs and lows of the Imperial Japanese Navy's premier torpedo-bombers.
