In the places between the spaces of your everyday life are other worlds. Where you walk, talk, work, live, and love... that's not the only thing happening there. Infinite worlds are born, wax, collapse, and die every nanosecond and in every coordinate in the grid of being. Most of the time, none are aware of the others. But sometimes... Sometimes your somewhat average, mediocre detective teams up with a stuttering scientist and an aristocratic art dealer to investigate inexplicable events and ends up uncovering answers that lead only to more questions, questions that involve a danger not only to our universe, but all existence.

"It was January 1, 2012, which happened to be a Sunday. It was Sunday morning, to be precise, around 10:30 a.m. I was driving my wife to my mother's house to pick up our daughter and proceed to church. I had the most horrendous headache, and I felt lower than dirt. It was a hangover-a word I would have never used or understood earlier in my life, but I had built up a problem over the years. I didn't want to admit it, though I knew the truth deep inside my heart. I had developed a drinking problem." I started this book right after finishing the first draft of a previous book. At the time, I was reading one of the many books my publisher had personally written where she posed the question, "What is God leading you to write?" At that very moment, I knew this was the book God was calling me to share. I tell parts of my personal alcohol story through various sections of this book, but, suffice it to say, I had a problem. I had the type of problem I believe exists rampantly in our society, but we rarely talk about it. To be clear, the police never arrested me for a DWI. I was not violent. I never physically hurt anyone. I was simply in a fog many of my days and made stupid choices in the fog. Life was wonderful and bright around me, but I chose to view it through the haze of alcohol. This book shares some of the realizations I've had since choosing to live alcohol-free on January 1, 2012. I hope you find comfort in my story and observations, as well as perhaps a little bit of useful truth for your own life journey. -Mark

In 1901 Buffalo was the national symbol of the country's optimism, pride, and braggadocio. Toward the close of the century, it epitomizes the sense of economic and demographic crisis prevalent in American industrial cities.High Hopes analyzes and interprets the historical forces-external and internal- that have shaped New York's second largest city. It examines the historical shifts that have served as a catalyst in Buffalo's growth, charting the city's evolution from a small frontier community through its development as a major commercial center and its emergence and eventual decline as a significant industrial metropolis. Mark Goldman looks at the detailed patterns of local daily life from the settlement of the village in the early nineteenth century to the tragedy of Love Canal. In the process, he covers a wide range of topics, including work, ethnicity, family and community life, class structure, and values and beliefs. By bringing to bear on the events and developments that have shaped Buffalo a broad range of subjects and ideas, Goldman helps readers to understand the vast array of complex forces at work in the historical development of all American cities.
