Der Poet, Literaturreformer, Diplomat und Kulturpolitiker Martin Opitz (1597-1639) ist bekannt als "Vater der deutschen Dichtung". Als wichtiger Vertreter des europäischen Späthumanismus verfasste er jedoch einen großen Teil seiner Werke auf Latein, was bislang in der Forschung kaum Beachtung gefunden hat. In der dreibändigen Edition werden sämtliche lateinischen Texte, darunter zahlreiche Neufunde, herausgegeben, übersetzt und ausführlich kommentiert. Der zweite Band umfaßt die in den Jahren 1624 bis Mitte 1631 erschienenen Werke. Neben separat publizierten Gelegenheits- und Geleitgedichten, geistlichen Schriften sowie Widmungsvorreden zählen darunter auch die Lebensbeschreibung des Siegfried von Promnitz sowie die umfangreiche Lyriksammlung der Silvae. Die Edition dokumentiert die große Bandbreite von Opitzens Werken aus seiner Zeit im Dienste des Kammerpräsidenten von Dohna, die in einer politisch angespannten und für den Verfasser persönlich schwierigen Lage entstanden. So erweist er sich auch hier als ein in fast allen Wissenschaften versierter Gelehrter, als ein Kenner der antiken und zeitgenössischen Literatur, als eine zentrale Gestalt in der respublica litteraria seiner Zeit mit besten Kontakten zu Adel und internationaler Diplomatie.
