En 1922, Barrès publie sa dernière oeuvre romanesque Un jardin sur l'Oronte. Le roman se présente bien comme une histoire d'amour et de religion mais il se situe dans l'Orient lointain des croisades. Ce n'est pas un hasard si l'action du roman se situe à l'époque des croisades. Il faut rappeler ici que Barrès lui-même datait son goût pour l'Orient de la lecture. En fait, Un jardin sur l'Oronte est comme la réalisation de tous ses rêves d'Orient. C'est, comme l'a montré Ida-Marie Frandon, la cristallisation des innombrables lectures orientales que Barrès a faites depuis sa jeunesse: Un jardin sur l'Oronte est l'aboutissement, l'épanouissement, la fleur de l'Orient de Barrès . De ce point de vue, Un jardin sur l'Oronte nous révèle le jardin poétique et secret de Barrès. Le jardin sur l'Oronte débute comme un poème et comme un chant. C'est une histoire d'amour. L'intrigue de ce roman se déroule à Lorraine après la guerre franco-allemande de 1870, et suit la séduction entre une jeune femme française et un professeur allemand. Le roman est adapté en court métrage sous le titre Lothringen! en 1994 par Jean-Marie Straub et Danièle Huillet.

Trente petits provinciaux de Lorraine et d'Alsace n'étaient guère faits pour recevoir avec profit cette haute poésie essentielle, ce triple extrait d'Athènes, d'Alexandrie et de Paris. Il eût mieux valu qu'un maître nous proposât une discipline lorraine, une vue à notre mesure de notre destinée entre la France et l'Allemagne. Le polythéisme mystique de Ménard tombait parmi nous comme une pluie d'étoiles; il ne pouvait que nous communiquer une vaine animation poétique. J'ai horreur des apports du hasard; je voudrais me développer en profondeur plutôt qu'en étendue; pourtant, je ne me plaindrai pas du coup d'alcool que nous donna, par cette lecture, Burdeau. Depuis vingt années, Ménard, sans me satisfaire, excite mon esprit. Peu après, vers 1883, comme j'avais l'honneur de fréquenter chez Leconte de Lisle, qui montrait aux jeunes gens une extrême bienveillance, je m'indignai devant lui d'avoir vu, chez Lemerre, la première édition des Rêveries presque totalement invendue. À cette date, je n'avais pas lu les préfaces doctrinales de Leconte de Lisle, d'où il appert que l'esthétique parnassienne repose sur l'hellénisme de Ménard, et j'ignorais que les deux poètes eussent participé aux agitations révolutionnaires et stériles que le second Empire écrasa. Je fus surpris jusqu'à l'émotion par l'affectueuse estime que Leconte de Lisle m'exprima pour son obscur camarade de jeunesse. Je fus surpris, car ce terrible Leconte de Lisle, homme de beaucoup d'esprit, mais plus tendre que bon, s'exerçait continuellement au pittoresque, en faisant le féroce dans la conversation; je fus ému, parce qu'à vingt ans, un novice souffre des querelles des maîtres que son admiration réunit...

Trois religieux lorrains, les frères Baillard, décident de faire revivre la colline de Sion, autrefois lieu de pèlerinage dédié à la Vierge. Remportant tous les succès, ils s'enrichissent jusqu'à inquiéter leurs supérieurs, et attirent les foules à Sion. Mais la rencontre de l'aîné Léopold avec l'hérésiarque Vintras, prêtre excommunié par l'Église, transforme Notre-Dame de Sion en bastion de la secte vintrasienne. Rejetée par les autorités catholiques, la communauté de Sion perd peu à peu fidèles et religieux, et ne reste qu'une poignée autour de Léopold et de ses frères. Le manque d'argent et l'arrivée d'un prêtre catholique orthodoxe dépêché par l'évêque de Nancy va chasser cette poignée de son église. Toutefois, pris par le remords et ému par l'amour sincère de Léopold pour sa colline, le prêtre catholique va s'employer à le ramener dans le giron de l'Église, et, après lui avoir donné l'extrême-onction, il obtiendra que Léopold abjure son hérésie.
