Er hatte schon drei Wochen in der Metropole der Neuen verbummelt und darüber nachgedacht, wie er es angreifen könne, sein Glück zu machen, und hatte sogar mich darüber befragt, obgleich ich damals so wenig wie jetzt danach aussah, als ob ich das Problem gelöst hätte. Ein Bürschchen aus guter Familie, dem seine Mama tausend Pfund in die Tasche gesteckt hatte, um ihm den Anfang zu erleichtern. Er strahlte vor Vergnügen, als ich ihn zum zweitenmal sah. Er hatte einen entfernten Vetter gefunden, der Amerika seit fünfundzwanzig Jahren kannte und schon ein halber Yankee geworden sein mußte, scharf und hell wie ein Eingeborener.
