Maynard Kaufman was born in 1929 and raised by Mennonite parents on a farm in South Dakota. After graduating from college he went on for graduate study in the Divinity School of the University of Chicago where he began writing his doctoral dissertation, James Joyce and The Temptation of Modern Gnosticism. In 1973 he began conducting a School of Homesteading on his farm near Bangor, Michigan. The farm was certified organic in the same year, and he was active in the organic movement in Michigan until his retirement in 2006. In From James Joyce to Organic Farming he uncovers the forces that shaped his evolution from a promising young academic to a seasoned environmentalist and, finally, a part-time farmer.
The Organic Movement in Michigan is the story of one of the earliest organized groups of organic advocates in the country, in the words of those who were on the front lines. The nineteen chapters in the book encompass a wide variety of information: historical summaries of the major organic organizations, reports on various organic activities, and essays about the past, present and future of organic farming. They provide a record of both successes and failures, triumphs and tragedies, such as the fatal encounter of OGM with the federal program for organic certification. This is a preface to my selection of theological essays. It is not a collection of all my theological writings. The essays were selected to support the theme in the title: "Evolution of a Post-Christian Theology." But although I sometimes taught courses on theology as a college teacher in a Religion Department, I never considered myself to be a professional theologian. Rather, I felt I was exploring theological possibilities appropriate for our time of environmental crisis, a crisis which is now manifest in climate change.
