On a rainy New Years Day, I embarked on an adventure unlike any other. With just the belongings that fit behind my saddle, I mounted my horse Apollo and rode away from everything I knew and loved to explore America by horseback. The next four years would bring me to over 10,000 miles of roads and towns that I had never visited before and where I knew nobody. I would ride through all kinds of weather, in the mountains and across the plains, with near constant pain from the sheer level of exertion necessary to travel in the saddle, and as often on my own feet, day after day after day. I would only reach my goal of riding to all 48 contiguous states by the tenacity to keep going, the kindness of strangers, and a whole lot of luck. This collection of short stories and regional recipes tells but a small part of the many adventures Apollo and I experienced on our journey. This fourth part covers the Great Lakes states from May to October 2019. Our story continues in the fifth collection: Atlantic.
When a horse teaches you the alphabet, what will you learn? All about life according to Apollo the Horse, of course! Fully illustrated with pictures of Apollo, the real life adventure horse. An early reader ABC book (ages 0-6).
There is perhaps no tree more American than the apple. If it had been a lesser part of our culture, there would be no such expression as American as apple pie. There would be no folk hero known as Johnny Appleseed. Maybe the mega company Apple would have been named Cherry or Pear. Apples are unique among fruit bearing trees in their adaptability to thrive in nearly every climate and landscape. Whether you live in the far north where summers are short and winters are cold, the hot deserts of the southwest, or anywhere in between, there is probably an apple tree growing not too far away. In this remarkable book, you will learn how to select a new tree and nurture it to a successful harvest, and how to care for an old tree to bring it back to health and productivity, no matter where you live or how small your orchard. Even the most challenging chores and problems, such as fixing wormy apples or pruning, are described in easy-to-follow steps and with in-depth science to help you to a successful harvest in your own yard.
