The book offers an analysis of Joachim Jungius¿ Texturæ Contemplatio - a hitherto-unpublished manuscript written in German and Latin that deals with weaving, knitting and other textile practices, attempting to present as well various fabrics and textile techniques in a scientifical and even mathematical framework. The book aims to provide the epistemological, technical and historic framework for Jungius¿ manuscript, inspecting fabrics, weaving techniques as well as looms and other textile machines in Holy Roman Empire during the Early Modern Period. It also offers a unique investigation of the notion and metaphor of ¿texture¿ during this period, and explores, within the wider context of the ¿meeting¿ or ¿trading zones¿ thesis, the relations between artisans and natural philosophers during the 17th century. The book is of interest to historians of philosophy and mathematics, as well as historians of technology.

We began with five quail. It was a little hobby, we called it. Two years later we had 150 of them and sold nearly 300 dozen eggs. We began with a 5'x5' herb garden. Four years later we couldn't eat everything we produced. It would be safe to say we have caught the "urban farming" bug. The quantifiable benefits of urban farming are easy to list, but what about the benefits that do not show up in the numbers? Through urban farming we have found peace of mind. We know where our food comes from. We have become part of a "community," and in this day and age, it feels pretty darned good to say that. We are a cog in a sustainable living movement and that, too, feels pretty darned good to say. Urban farming is making a comeback in the United States, and I suspect it will explode in the next few years as people become more aware of food quality and the importance of localism. So this coloring book is for the urban farmers out there, and the urban farmer wannabees. May you find as much pleasure in it as my wife and I have found. Angel is the caretaker of a way station to heaven. The guardians that prepare the girls for their final journey live in the trees of the nearby peach orchard. Everything is peaceful until a girl named Hope is found stranded at Angel's Field because her guardian has been abducted. It is up to Angel and Cyrus a woodsmen and keeper of the orchard to recover her. Joined by Carpenter from a way station for young boys called 'The Swing Zone', the three leave their peaceful valley and set off towards the river. Captain Castel whose daughter is very ill, is the caretaker of another way station for people going in the opposite direction across the river. Once the toll is paid there is no return. A thief named Messr. See de Arogänt, called Seede who operates a peddler's wagon is hired by Captain Castel to bring him a guardian. Angel, Cyrus, and Carpenter find themselves on a mission to sustain Hope. When a rumor reaches the ears of Captain Castel that a guardian may be acquired that could save his sick daughter he sets his plan in motion. A thief named Messr. See de Arogänt, called Seede who operates a peddler's wagon is hired by Captain Castel to bring him a guardian. All appears to be going well for Seede and Captain Castel when they are found out. A little girl is left behind in Angel's Field because her guardian has been abducted. It is up to Angel and Cyrus a woodsmen and keeper of the orchard to recover her. Joined by Carpenter from a way station for young boys called 'The Swing Zone', the three leave their peaceful valley and set off towards the river. Cyrus and Angel have lived a peaceful existence in their valley as caretakers of Angel's Field a way station for young girls on their journey to heaven. Join Angel, Cyrus and Carpenter as they make their way down the mountain and across the river in pursuit of the girl named Hope's guardian angel.

The book offers an extensive study on the convoluted history of the research of algebraic surfaces, focusing for the first time on one of its characterizing curves: the branch curve. Starting with separate beginnings during the 19th century with descriptive geometry as well as knot theory, the book focuses on the 20th century, covering the rise of the Italian school of algebraic geometry between the 1900s till the 1930s (with Federigo Enriques, Oscar Zariski and Beniamino Segre, among others), the decline of its classical approach during the 1940s and the 1950s (with Oscar Chisini and his students), and the emergence of new approaches with Boris Moishezon's program of braid monodromy factorization.By focusing on how the research on one specific curve changed during the 20th century, the author provides insights concerning the dynamics of epistemic objects and configurations of mathematical research. It is in this sense that the book offers to take the branch curve as a cross-section through the history of algebraic geometry of the 20th century, considering this curve as an intersection of several research approaches and methods. This comes as no surprise, since with few exceptions paper folding was seldom considered as a mathematical practice, let alone as a mathematical procedure of inference or proof that could prompt novel mathematical discoveries. A few questions immediately arise: Why did paper folding become a non-instrument? What caused the marginalisation of this technique? And how was the mathematical knowledge, which was nevertheless transmitted and prompted by paper folding, later treated and conceptualised?Aiming to answer these questions, this volume provides, for the first time, an extensive historical study on the history of folding in mathematics, spanning from the 16th century to the 20th century, and offers a general study on the ways mathematical knowledge is marginalised, disappears, is ignored or becomes obsolete.In doing so, it makes a valuable contribution to the field of history and philosophy of science, particularly the history and philosophy of mathematics and is highly recommended for anyone interested in these topics.
