Ex-soldier-turned-wanderer Keran travels into the wasteland, fleeing an unknown horror that has killed his friends. He finds safety in an isolated tower by an oasis, but the tower slowly becomes his prison, for the creature awaits him beyond its walls. During his enforced isolation, Keran slowly unravels the mysteries of his sanctuary and the monster that hunts him. Eventually all hope of resuming his previous life is lost and he becomes obsessed with seeing the creature destroyed.

Space is vast. No matter how much firepower you have, you can't defeat your enemy unless you know exactly where and when to strike. That's why Lieutenant Emil is so critical to his task force. He's a type of electromagnetic warfare specialist called an emmer serving in an interstellar war. However, Emil is slowly going insane- a path already taken by two other emmers in the task force. He's seeing scenes from all over the ship, noticing things that can't be real, and starting to doubt his own humanity. What's worse, the war isn't going well, and the crew of the flagship Excalibur are dependent upon Emil to do his job better than ever before. When the alien enemy called the Vothriles ask for a secret meeting in deep space with Emil's task force, everyone is suspicious. The warship Excalibur heads out to meet with the alien foes that no Terran yet understands. The Vothriles propose joining forces against an even greater common menace, a mysterious enemy code-named "Force Cantrithor". No one knows if Force Cantrithor can be defeated, or if the Vothriles can be trusted. But it may not matter. How much longer can Emil hold it together, anyway?

Rarely does a book by a national leader live up to its promise. Protecting Western Landscapes: Wonderful Places in the West that Conservationists Have Worked to Protect, written by former long-time Sierra Club Executive Director Michael McCloskey, exceeds its promise. The book tells the story of the fights to save different wildernesses and other natural areas that make up so much of the American natural heritage. The author introduces the reader to little-known heroes such as William G. Steel, who almost single-handedly led to the creation of Crater Lake National Park. The book also tells stories that start off sadder, such as Californians' initial reaction to the destruction of much of the state's giant sequoias. This well-written book moves briskly from one battle to save this heritage to another. It is a must-read for anyone interested in environmental history. Conserving Oregon''s Environment traces the arc of successes in conserving Oregon''s environment, beginning in the 1880s and continuing to 2013. It answers the questions: Where did this program or reserve come from? Who led the way, and who opposed it? What difference has it made?It deals with the breadth of modern environmentalism: protecting nature, habitat, purifying ambient media, eliminating unsafe operations, and promoting energy efficiency. It is organized around themes, such as public lands, state parks, rivers, wilderness, environmental laws and turning points on such issues, modern reserves, new refuges, breakthroughs on national forests; each chapter tells its story chronologically. Two appendices accompany the text: a timeline of accomplishments, and a list of organizations providing leadership. In addition, maps show the location of reserves.It concludes that Oregon occupies a special place in the history of conservation because of the degree of innovation here and the continuity of progress. For its size, no state has done more to make history in protecting its environment.
