This book illustrates the developments of task-based language teaching (TBLT) approaches in relation to the evolution of digital technologies. It highlights how technology-mediated TBLT principles can support English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learning and contribute to understanding new classroom dynamics. Drawing from the key theoretical concepts of TBLT, the author discusses the integration of tasks and technologies from a secondary education perspective, which is often under-represented in the TBLT literature. Morgana looks at how the EFL secondary classroom has been recently re-conceptualised as a social place whose boundaries go far behind the traditional school settings. This book provides theoretical approaches and classroom implementation practices by presenting four case studies on the different L2 skills (reading, writing, listening and speaking). The volume is organised into two main sections. The first section focuses on the theoretical approaches to TBLT and highlights the key concepts behind this methodology. This section also looks at the recent development of a technology-mediated TBLT framework and its implementations in various EFL educational contexts. The second section presents four case studies of secondary-school EFL learners in Italy. Each case study focuses on a different language skill, providing examples of classroom practices in both blended and online learning settings. Pedagogical recommendations for teachers are provided at the end of each case study. The book adopts a multimodal approach and aims at providing scholars in applied linguistics and TBLT practitioners with theories and implementation practices to understand the ways technologies are shaping tasks and mediating students' learning processes.
The Covid-19 pandemic has directly impacted the way teachers and learners worldwide teach and learn languages, forcing numerous educational activities in technologically-deprived contexts to stop altogether and those in technologically-rich environments to go online on an emergency basis. This volume provides a collection of theoretical and practical insights into the challenges and affordances faced globally during the pandemic and lessons learnt about the application of digital technologies for language teaching and learning. The chapters explore the vital role of technology in its various forms, including the internet, social media, CALL (Computer-Assisted Language Learning), MALL (Mobile Assisted Language Learning), TALL (Technology Assisted Language Learning) and TELL (Technology Enhanced Language Learning). Topics explored include the new avenues digital technology has opened up for language teachers and learners, options and challenges in applying technology in various contexts, and how the second language education industry could have been adversely impacted at the time of the pandemic without technological affordances. The contributions showcase studies from various geographical contexts, revealing how the global crisis was received and tackled differently in Australia, Hong Kong, Iran, Italy, Japan, New Zealand, the UAE, the UK and the USA.
The lovable curmudgeon with an oxymoronic identity is back with more of his off-beat perspective on reality. This time, the Rabbi takes off the gloves and lands haymakers on the chin of the "brave new world." You may agree, you may not, but it is almost certain that his views will help anyone distill their own. Thoughtful, bombastic and always entertaining, the Rabbi has sharpened his feather quill to put a fine point on these "Odds and Ends."

Almost 5,000 years ago Enheduanna took time to write 42 hymns and a poem called Min-Me-Sar-Ra or The Exaultation of Inanna. She is considered the first woman author in recorded history. Forward fast a few thousand years and we are priviledged to have the more sophisticated pennings of Michael Thomas, and you do not have to carry huge volumes of stone tablets to read it. Yet, Michael pays homage to the greatness of those who blazed the trail upon which the rest of us travel. He pulls it all into an amalgamous knowledge of expressive language. Come and see what poetry has evolved to over 5,000 years.
There are writers and there are writers, there are poets and then there are poets, and then there's Michael Thomas. Here is a man who is a Vietnam Veteran, has lived in a commune, has slept in doorways, and is a very respected C. P. A. How does this all happen to the same man? Fate, chance, whatever the reason, what matters is it did happen. In his first book of poetry, Michael takes us on the rich and varied journey which is his life, complete with all of the philosophical questions, and sometimes even answers. Yet, at the heart of it all is a kindness and a gratitude towards life that is refreshing and nourishing. If you like poetry, or even if you just like to experience the world through the eyes of someone who truly loves life, you will love Michael Thomas Poetry.
