With the emerging worldwide interest in adopting and studying traditional system and exploiting their potential based on different health care system, the evaluation of the rich heritage of traditional medicine is essential.Biological studies are essential requirement for the safe and effective use of therapeutic agents. With an increasing global demand for herbal medicines, it is necessary that the quality and consistency of these drugs are maintained with maximum efficacy, purity, potency, quality control and standardization of the raw drugs as well as finished products. Therefore it has become extremely important to make an effort towards standardization of the plant material to be used as medicine. Plant materials stay an important source for struggle sickness as well as infectious diseases. The complementary and alternative medicines are becoming more widely accepted and there is increasing belief in efficacy and safety of herbal remedies. The medicinal plants are back bone of traditional medicine and used for treatment of disorder or ailments.
Crude drugs have been used as medicines from ancient times for preparation of many galenicals. Today they have been replaced by pure medicinal chemicals isolated from natural sources or prepared synthetically. Today estimate that about 80% of the people in developing countries still relays on traditional system of medicine for their primary health care. Plants from the main ingredients of medicines in traditional system of medicines and have been the source of inspiration for many researchers in field of medicine. The use of plants as medicines has involved the isolation of active compounds, beginning with the isolation of morphine from opium in the early 19th century. Isolation and characterization of pharmacologically active compounds from medicinal plants continue today. The active phytoconstituents of many plant drugs are still unexplored. The advances in phytochemistry have lead to successful exploitation of known techniques viz. Extraction, separation and purification, identification and phytopharmacological studies of the crude drugs.
This book is anticipated to introduce plant pathology to undergraduate, post graduates and Ph.D. students. This book is on digital audio visual (AV) preservation. It highlights the concept, theory and practical issues of the long term digital AV preservation. The book is based on a European Union¿s Presto4U project that deals with creation of software to facilitate matching of AV preservation ¿Needs¿ with required ¿Tools¿. This qualitative and quantitative study covered fourteen organizations (libraries, museums, and research institutions) belonging to several European countries as a contributor of European Union¿s Presto4U project.Three communities of practice namely Research and Scientific Collections; Video Production and Post Production; Learning and Teaching Repositories have provided their needs for analysis.Open Archival Information System (OAIS) reference model is used as theoretical framework because it provides complete guide on how to preserve a digital document for long term.In short, the study has evaluated and discovered the knowledge schema usefulness to express the needs of communities of practice but data needs to be collected in a manner it easily fits into the structure of knowledge schema.
