The book titled ""The Mormon of the Little Manitou Island: A Historical Romance"" is a work of historical fiction written by Nehemiah Hawkins and published in the year 1916. The story is set in the early 19th century and revolves around a young man named John, who is a devout follower of the Mormon faith. John lives on the Little Manitou Island, which is located in Lake Michigan, and is a part of the state of Michigan in the United States. The book begins with John's arrival on the island, where he meets a group of Native Americans who are living there. He soon becomes close friends with them and learns about their culture and way of life. However, his peaceful existence is disrupted when a group of white settlers arrive on the island, led by a man named Mr. Smith.Mr. Smith is a wealthy and powerful man who is determined to take over the island and its resources. He sees the Native Americans as inferior and intends to exploit them for his own gain. John, who is deeply committed to his faith and the principles of equality and justice, opposes Mr. Smith's plans and becomes a thorn in his side.As the story progresses, John's relationship with Mr. Smith becomes increasingly tense, and he finds himself embroiled in a series of conflicts and struggles. Along the way, he meets a young woman named Mary, who becomes his ally and confidante. Together, they work to protect the island and its inhabitants from Mr. Smith's greed and tyranny. The book is written in a romantic style, with vivid descriptions of the island's natural beauty and the characters' emotions and motivations. It is a question how far a good working knowledge of drawing can be attained without a teacher; it is true that but few have become proficient without such aid, but it is equally true that "self-help" has been the key note to all advancement. The author received personal instruction in several ways and times, at home, in school, in an architect's office, and under an experienced mechanical engineer, but it was in the early morning hours of a bright summer time-lang syne-that he made his first serious attempt to master the art of mechanical drawing. It was a struggle and a battle to hold himself down to "the board" to the finish, but it was a victory-one, won over slothfulness and impatience, and of such a nature as to warrant the use of the term "self-help" to the encouragement of others. In conclusion two sentiments may be added; if a good workingknowledge of drawing is "worth the while" then, 1, the student should be thoroughly in earnest in acquiring it; 2, he should be willing to take sufficient time and give much hard study to gain the skill necessary for success. This persistence is not irksome. It carries its own reward, and the results are definite and sure.
