The light motif that permeates this collection of poems operates within and between domains. Composed in mid-life, they engage with many of its concerns: work, home, relationships, social conscience and the beliefs and values that inform how we manage these areas of experience. Conceding the imminence of "the usual world," Perception of Light documents "the scheduled/and incidental joys" that contend with anxiety, affirming "what gives meaning in the here, the now," despite its transience.
In 2014, Nick released his debut collection of poetry, Perception of Light. The first volume of two featuring Nick's back catalogue, Subdued Anthems consists of material originally circulated via the Hedgehog House imprint. Here, the recurring themes of attachment and separation, innocence and experience, are interspersed with meditations on the contemporary significance of seasonal commemorations and the affirmation that "love's the equator: /the one constant/among variables/like the standard of medical care/and the price of sparrows."
In 2014, Nick released his debut collection of poetry, Perception of Light, following this during the next year with Subdued Anthems and Strange Country, two volumes of earlier material. The Beautiful Place develops the personal narratives that commenced with Perception of Light while addressing wider concerns suggested in travel east and west -continuity and impermanence, the significance or otherwise of the individual and the opposing prospects of extinction and survival. Conscious, always, of "work" and "the thousand mundane tyrannies/that rule the home", this collection embraces the "solace" of "the beautiful" and its manifestation in different contexts, including that of "the ordinary yet miraculous".
