Tallinn is the capital of Estonia and the oldest capital city in northern Europe. The city is the financial, business and technology hub of the Baltic region and The New York Times has called the city the "Silicon Valley on the Baltic Sea." This Scandanavian city is surrounded by water on three sides and has thousands of tiny islands, inlets and skerries. Helsinki is a modern city known for its high quality architectural design. The city can be explored on foot or by taking a few short tram journeys.
Located between the Oslo fjord and the moose-inhabited forests, Norway's capital and largest city is a melting pot. With glass-covered skyscrapers, trendy bars and royal parks, Oslo is one of the wealthiest European cities. The Norwegian Fjords are located in West Norway near to the cities of Bergen and Ålesund and have been rated as the world's top tourist destination by National Geographic magazine. Geiranger, in Møre og Romsdal and Nærøyfjord, in Sogn og Fjordane are also highly-rated UNESCO World Heritage sites.
Moscow is the capital of the Russian Federation and its most famous attraction, the Kremlin, is full of historic significance. Architecture from the Russian Empire can still be seen in the city and signs of wealth abound. Moscow was once the capital of the former Soviet Union (USSR) prior to the end of the Cold War. Located on the Gulf of Finland and the Baltic Sea, St. Petersburg is one of the most attractive cities in Russia and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Founded in 1703 by Tsar Peter the Great, St Petersburg is the second largest city in Russia and has stunning architecture and rich historical significance.
Lapland is not a country but it is actually a region that stretches across Finland, Russia, Norway and Sweden. Nearly all of Lapland falls within the Arctic Circle. The largest part of Lapland is in Finland, where approximately a quarter of the country is Lappish. For thousands of years people have been fascinated by Norway's Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis) and its magical display of coloured lights dancing across northern skies. These northern lights are caused by the earth's magnetic field reacting with electrically charged solar particles. Tromsø in Norway is one of the best places on earth to see this spectacular display.
An eclectic and thriving metropolis of over two million people, Stockholm is a visually appealing Swedish city built on 14 islands that are connected by 57 bridges. Wide boulevards and fine buildings keep perfect company with painted wooden houseboats and ultramodern skyscrapers. Sweden's west coast city of Gothenburg (Göteborg) is the second-largest city in Sweden and has a population of 520,000. Gothenburg University is the largest in the Nordic countries with over 65,000 students.
Latvia is a historic and pretty coastal European country on the Baltic Sea that is bordered by Estonia, Lithuania, Russia and Belarus. The capital Riga is a World Heritage Site. Next door, Lithuania is also an emerging tourist destination in the era of low-cost flights in Europe. The country has beautiful rivers, lakes, forests and natural areas occupy large parts of the country.
