Seminar paper from the year 2019 in the subject Didactics for the subject English - Pedagogy, Literature Studies, University of Wuppertal, language: English, abstract: The increased use of digital tools in the EFL class and the inclusion of special education needs students into classrooms sets the question how the use of digital media in the foreign language classroom impacts special education needs students. Does it enhance or impede their abilities, especially their abilities in writing, in the foreign language learning process? The modern society can be characterized as a technology based information society. Therefore, it should be no surprise that there is an increased use of digital tools in many classrooms. As an example, foreign language teachers make use of a wide range of electronically based technology resources to allow for an authentic foreign language experience in the classroom. However, there is another factor which foreign language teachers have to take in account when including digital media in their lessons; the inclusion of special education needs students. In the year 2006 a political document, named Convention of the United Nations on the rights of persons with disabilities, came into force in New York and was signed by 167 states. This document promotes for the non-discrimination of of people with disabilities and demands the change of the structure of the whole society. Since its publication it has led to the beginning of many changes in different areas of life; especially in education. From an educational point of view the most important articles in this document are §24 2a and §24 2b which declare the right of persons with disabilities to have equal access to education at primary and secondary schools. In 2009 Germany ratified the Convention of the United Nations on the rights of persons with disabilities and with that started the implementation of inclusive classrooms.

Seminar paper from the year 2019 in the subject American Studies - Literature, grade: 1,3, University of Wuppertal (Geistes- und Kulturwissenschaften), course: The Holocaust in Eastern Europe in History and American Literature, language: English, abstract: This term paper aims to examine the function of the animal masks in Art Spiegelman¿s graphic novel "Maus" with the question in mind whether it trivializes the Holocaust or not. The paper will begin with an introduction to the different types of animal heads and the possible reasons for the choice of the artist by giving some historical background. The main part will discuss the use of the animal masks and its functions by analyzing significant panels from "MAUS". Finally, the paper will also contain a conclusion in which the results will be summarized."MAUS" is an autobiographically written graphic novel by Art Spiegelman which consists of two parts, "Maus I" (1986) and "Maus II" (1992), and tells the story of the artist¿s parents, Anja and Vladek, who survived the Holocaust and the reader also gets a view on the afterlife of Vladek and his relationship with his son "Artie".Art Spiegelman received a lot of praise and was celebrated in the press for his work. Amongst other achievements, he was honored with the Pulitzer Prize for "MAUS" in 1992. However, his graphic novel was also criticized for the use of animal masks for the characters. To elaborate on this, Spiegelman chose to depict the affiliation to a religion or culture of characters by using animal make in the past and present time of the graphic novel. For example, cats for Germans, mice for Jews and pigs for Poles. Especially the representation of Jews as mice and Poles as pigs caused many negative critiques from Jewish and Polish people themselves. Furthermore, Spiegelman¿s presentation method was criticized for naturalizing something unnatural, which means it was perceived as trivializing the Holocaust and by that insulting the victims. Even though the use of animal masks was criticized for in a way trivializing the Holocaust, one could also argue that the animal heads function as a medium to demonstrate the racist ideology of the Nazis and the hierarchies during that time. In addition, one could also argue that the presence of the animal heads in the present time of the graphic novel indicate the effects and consequences for the persons related after the Holocaust. These different perspectives on this topic raised the question of whether the graphic novel really trivializes the Holocaust or not.

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2019 in the subject American Studies - Literature, grade: 1,7, University of Wuppertal, language: English, abstract: This paper compares Louisa May Alcott's "Little Women" and Anna Todd's "The Spring Girls" paying special attention to gender roles in the two novels. It aims to look at Anna Todd¿s retelling by portraying the change and development of the role of women and feminism in a period of 150 years. So, the main question will be: What changes and new issues in the role of women in America can be found in the retelling, "The Spring Girls", which was published 150 years after "Little Women" and how does the author, Anna Todd, deal with Louisa May Alcott¿s legacy? In order to answer the question above, the paper will start off by building a theoretical frame on the history of feminism and adaptation theory. Latter will firstly, define the term adaptation and then, focus on the general changes and their effects in "The Spring Girls". Next, the paper will continue with the main part which will depict more specific changes in the new novel, changes in the role of women and the perception of feminism. In doing so, it will focus on four different topics, namely, the home sphere, class and social acceptance, relationships and sexuality, and last but not least the new woman. This is aimed to be achieved by analyzing and comparing Louisa May Alcott¿s Little Women and Anna Todd¿s retelling The Spring Girls. The analysis of the stories of all of the four sisters instead of only one, as found in most research papers, aims to offer a new feminist reading of the novel.
