Amy Roberta (Berta) Ruck, Mrs. Oliver Onions (1878 -1978) was a British writer of several short stories and over 90 romance novels from 1905 to 1972. She also wrote an autobiography and two memoir-style works. As Berta Ruck began to contribute short stories and serials to magazines from 1905. She published her first novel, His Official Fiancée in 1914, which was the subject of two films: His Official Fiancée (1919), silent film directed by Robert G. Vignola and Hans officiella fästmö (1944), Swedish movie directed by Nils Jerring.

It seems strangely like old times to me to be making these jottings in Pitman's shorthand. I was surprised to find I remembered as much of it as I do, for I dropped it suddenly when Archie Merridew died, and Archie's clear, high-pitched voice was the last that ever dictated to me for speed, while I myself have not dictated since Archie took down his last message from my reading. That will be-say a dozen years or more ago next August. It may be a little more, or a little less. Nor, since I do not keep it as an anniversary, does the day of the month matter.

George Oliver Onions (1873 - 1961) was an English novelist who published over forty novels and story collections. Onions wrote detective fiction. Onions wrote two science fiction novels: New Moon (1918) about a utopian Britain, and The Tower of Oblivion (1921), featuring a middle-aged man who recedes back to his youth. Onions wrote several collections of ghost stories, of which the best known is Widdershins (1911). It includes the novella The Beckoning Fair One, widely regarded as one of the best in the genre of horror fiction, especially psychological horror.
