ChinacomBiz 2008 was the first international business-to-business (B2B) conference held in collaboration with the Chinacom scientific event in Hangzhou, China, on August 28. It was specifically tailored to produce more effective dialogue between the research, technology and business communities on technical developments in China and around the world. The event had industry support via well-know industry names such as the WIFI Alliance, Springer, CREATE-NET and Arris. The main focus of the event was on transport networks and infrastructures, video distribution systems and methods and the associated software systems that tie them all together. A total of 24 authors submitted their papers and a final 11 registrations were accepted. It was an excellent start to the B2B program and feedback was positive from all attendees. The presentations this year originated from the USA, Denmark, Germany, Brazil and of course China, providing the audience with a wide variety of topics and persp- tives in all the three categories mentioned above. Next year's event is already being planned and it will again be collocated with the Chinacom scientific event. #FeesMustFall, the student revolt that began in October 2015, was an uprising against lack of access to, and financial exclusion from, higher education in South Africa. More broadly, it radically questioned the socio-political dispensation resulting from the 1994 social pact between big business, the ruling elite and the liberation movement. The 2015 revolt links to national and international youth struggles of the recent past and is informed by black consciousness politics and social movements of the international left. Yet, its objectives are more complex than those of earlier struggles. The student movement has challenged the hierarchical, top-down leadership system of university management and it's 'double speak' of professing to act in workers' and students' interests yet entrenching a regressive system for control and governance. University managements, while on one level amenable to change, have also co-opted students into their ranks to create co-responsibility for the highly bureaucratised university financial aid that stands in the way of their social revolution. This book maps the contours of student discontent a year after the start of the #FeesMustFall revolt. Student voices dissect colonialism, improper compromises by the founders of democratic South Africa, feminism, worker rights and meaningful education. In-depth assessments by prominent scholars reflect on the complexities of student activism, its impact on national and university governance, and offer provocative analyses of the power of the revolt.

A former adviser to the ANC, Bond investigates how groups such as the ANC went from being a force of liberation for all people to a vehicle now perceived as serving the economic interests of an elite few. Bond covers a range of socioeconomic factors under both the old and new South Africa, highlighting the reasons for the transition's 'development' failure and drawing on case studies on key issues: social contracts, black economic empowerment, housing and corporate power. He explores the idea that progressive policymaking is being compromised by the new petit bourgeoisie and ruling elite, and assesses the view that, as change slows down, official policy is increasingly one of lower expectations.

Presenting an analysis of the causes of African poverty, this book contextualises Africa's wealth outflow within a stagnant but volatile world economy.
