Romans 12 provides us with a general outlook on how to live the Christian life. While many think what Paul has to say is unreasonable and impossible, Paul presents it as the way God expects us to live and gives us the grace to live. It is imperative for Christians to stop living like the world and listening to its advice. Christians must learn to live according to the principles given in the Bible and take our marching orders from the Written Word as given by the Living Word. This book is chuck full of scriptures and solidly based on the Word of God. God expects obedience and tells us obedience is better than sacrifice. We need to live in a manner that is congruent with the Word.God tells us how to live according to His Word, live in peace with others, what wonderful spiritual gifts He has given us, how to love our enemies, and how to avoid evil. This chapter in Romans is truly the recipe for living godly lives.
Have you wondered about why our Lord gave us what is commonly known as the Lord's Prayer? Philip looks at both Matthew's and Luke's version of this prayer. This should be called the model prayer since Jesus' high priestly prayer in John is a prayer that Jesus prayed. Why did Jesus teach those listening to Him at the Sermon and the Mount and later to His disciples in private this prayer? What was the question His disciples asked? Did they ask for a formula to insert their needs into so God would hear and answer them? Did they need some magical incantation that if they followed it closely, they would receive what they wanted? Or did they ask to be taught the importance of prayer so they would pray more?It is the author's belief that the question was that the Lord teach His disciples to pray. Jesus did not answer like Nike and say, "Just do it!" No, Jesus gave the example to teach His followers to understand the importance of prayer so they would enter prayer more often. Come explore the various parts of this wonderful prayer and learn why it is so imperative to pray without ceasing.
Today's church is woefully lacking in an understanding of the very core of Christianity. van Heusen goes back to the true stories in the book of Genesis to lay a solid foundation for understanding the basics of why Christ had to die to pay for our sins. Once we understand the foundation, we will better understand why we need a Redeemer. We will understand what the meaning of Christ being our Perfect Sacrifice. We will understand the way of redemption. We will understand how God prepared His people to accept the coming of the Suffering Messiah. This book helps us understand the need of a blood sacrifice to cover our many sins. The only way sin can be covered is by a blood sacrifice. The only way sin can be forgiven is on the basis of a perfect, holy sacrifice. Jesus Christ as the God-man is the only One Who was qualified to make the sacrifice to forgive sins by the shedding of His perfect blood.
