This work is based on ethnographic research in three communities in Kerala, India, which sent large numbers of workers to the Middle East for temporary jobs. It explores the factors responsible for the striking differences in the groups' patterns of migration and migration-induced social change.
Shows how various Hindu American organizations are attempting to answer the puzzling questions of identity outside their homeland. Drawing on the experiences of both immigrant and American-born Hindu Americans, this work demonstrates how religious ideas and practices are being imported, exported, and reshaped in the process.
