S'inspirant d'une légende lituanienne dont Mérimée prit connaissance au cours d'un voyage en Russie et dans les Pays baltes, elle relate le séjour d'un philologue prussien dans un château où il découvre peu à peu la nature trouble de son hôte, dont le lecteur doit comprendre qu'il est le fruit du viol d'une femme par un ours.

Prosper Mérimée (1803-1870) var en fransk historiker og fremstående repræsentant for romantismen. Han er kendt for at forfine den korte prosaform. Han skrev med andre ord primært noveller og kortromaner, og han er bedst kendt for ‘Carmen’, der danner basis for Bizets opera af samme navn.I denne bog er temaet hævn! ‘Colomba’ fortæller nådesløst om Orso, der på baggrund af den korsikanske vendetta-tradition, er tvunget til at overveje, hvorvidt han må hævne sin fars død og starte en gedigen blodfejde. Mordet er tilsyneladende begået af Barricini-familien, men Lydia Nevil, forsøger at tale ham fra det. Hans søster derimod er fast besluttet på, at Orso skal gennemføre sit grusomme forehavende.
