    Cuando el poeta se decidió a escribir comedias, sólo esta empresa creyó echar sobre sí: la de componer sus fábulas de suerte que diesen gusto al pueblo. Mas ahora advierte que las cosas van muy al revés, pues se ve obligado a forjar prólogos, no para declarar el argumento, sino en respuesta a las malévolas censuras de un poeta rancio. Suplícoos, pues, que oigáis con atención de qué le reprenden.Menandro compuso La Andriana y La Perintia. Quien la una de ellas conociere bien, conocerá las dos, según ambas son de argumento semejante, aunque por el diálogo y el estilo diferentes. Todo lo que de La Perintia cuadraba para La Andriana, Terencio confiesa haberlo trasladado, sirviéndose de ello cual si fuese de su propia invención. Y esto es lo que sus enemigos le censuran. Porque dicen que no es bien hacer de varias una sola fábula. Presumiendo de muy sabios, muestran saber poco; pues al acusarle de esto, acusan por igual a Nevio, a Plauto, a Ennio, a quienes nuestro poeta tiene por maestros, y cuya libertad más precia él imitar que no la obscura exactitud de esos censores. Les aconsejo que, de hoy más, cierren el pico y dejen de murmurar, si no quieren oír sus defectos.Prestadle vuestro favor, asistid de buena voluntad y oíd la comedia, para que sepáis lo que promete, y si las que hará de nuevo serán dignas o no de ser representadas.
