The Expansion of Europe, written by Ramsay Muir, is a historical account of the expansion of European countries from the 15th to the 18th century. The book explores the political, economic, and social factors that led to this expansion, including the rise of capitalism, the growth of trade, and the development of technology. Muir also examines the impact of European expansion on other regions of the world, particularly Africa, Asia, and the Americas. He discusses the effects of colonization, the slave trade, and the spread of Christianity, as well as the resistance and adaptation of indigenous peoples. The book provides a comprehensive overview of European expansionism and its lasting effects on global history. The issue of the great conflict lies still upon the lap of the gods. Yet one thing is, we may hope, already assured. Although at the beginning of the war they came near to winning it, the Germans are not now likely to win that complete victory upon which they had calculated, and which would have brought as its prize the mastery of the world. We can now form some judgment of the extent of the calamity which this would have meant for humanity. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. • - The Culmination of Modern History

The purpose of this book is twofold. We realise to-day, as never before, that the fortunes of the world, and of every individual in it, are deeply affected by the problems of world-politics and by the imperial expansion and the imperial rivalries of the greater states of Western civilisation. But when men who have given no special attention to the history of these questions try to form a sound judgment on them, they find themselves handicapped by the lack of any brief and clear resume of the subject. I have tried, in this book, to provide such a summary, in the form of a broad survey, unencumbered with detail, but becoming fuller as it comes nearer to our own time. That is my first purpose. In fulfilling it I have had to cover much well-trodden ground. But I hope I have avoided the aridity of a mere compendium of facts. My second purpose is rather more ambitious. In the course of my narrative I have tried to deal with ideas rather than with mere facts. I have tried to bring out the political ideas which are implicit in, or which result from, the conquest of the world by Western civilisation; and to show how the ideas of the West have affected the outer world, how far they have been modified to meet its needs, and how they have developed in the process. In particular I have endeavoured to direct attention to the significant new political form which we have seen coming into existence, and of which the British Empire is the oldest and the most highly developed example-the world-state, embracing peoples of many different types, with a Western nation-state as its nucleus. The study of this new form seems to me to be a neglected branch of political science, and one of vital importance. Whether or not it is to be a lasting form, time alone will show. Finally I have tried to display, in this long imperialist conflict, the strife of two rival conceptions of empire: the old, sterile, and ugly conception which thinks of empire as mere domination, ruthlessly pursued for the sole advantage of the master, and which seems to me to be most fully exemplified by Germany; and the nobler conception which regards empire as a trusteeship, and which is to be seen gradually emerging and struggling towards victory over the more brutal view, more clearly and in more varied forms in the story of the British Empire than in perhaps any other part of human history. That is why I have given a perhaps disproportionate attention to the British Empire. The war is determining, among other great issues, which of these conceptions is to dominate the future.

Muir's History of Liverpool is one of the classic histories of the city. This book tells the history of Liverpool in a lucid, captivating and forthright manner. By resisting the temptation to become ensnared by the minutiae of historical detail, Muir ensures that his narrative never flags as he traces the story of the rise of Liverpool from its obscure origins as a tiny hamlet of little of no significance to its status as a great international trading port and city. It is a fascinating and at times even a thrilling tale. The chapters consider Liverpool's development by historical period, and cover among other things, the geographical disadvantages faced by Liverpool and how the burgesses, merchants and Town Council overcame them; how Liverpool became a borough; the social conditions of the town; the effects of various foreign wars; the effect of the English Civil War; how the town's trade and wealth grew; the slave trade; piracy and privateering; the age of inventions; how the artistic and intellectual life of the city began to flourish; and the progress made in the nineteenth century. This book is a reproduction of the 1907 edition. It has been painstakingly re-typeset, and the images scanned at high resolution to provide a quality product at an affordable price. The text is unchanged apart from a few very minor adjustments, and although the punctuation is largely as it appears in the 1907 edition, there are some changes, principally in modernising the punctuation of quotations. The index has been slightly amended.

Nationalism And Internationalism: The Culmination Of Modern History is a book written by Ramsay Muir and originally published in 1916. The book explores the concepts of nationalism and internationalism, and how they have shaped modern history. Muir argues that nationalism, which emphasizes the importance of a nation's identity, culture, and history, has been a dominant force in shaping the modern world. However, Muir also recognizes the importance of internationalism, which emphasizes cooperation and collaboration between nations. The book is divided into two parts. The first part explores the rise of nationalism and its impact on modern history. Muir examines the emergence of nationalism in Europe, the role of nationalism in the formation of nation-states, and the impact of nationalism on international relations. He also discusses the challenges posed by nationalism, including ethnic conflicts, imperialism, and the threat of war.The second part of the book focuses on internationalism and its potential to mitigate the negative effects of nationalism. Muir examines the emergence of international organizations, such as the League of Nations, and their efforts to promote peace and cooperation between nations. He also discusses the challenges facing internationalism, including the rise of totalitarian regimes and the outbreak of World War II.Overall, Nationalism And Internationalism: The Culmination Of Modern History is a thought-provoking exploration of two important concepts that continue to shape the modern world. Muir's analysis provides insight into the challenges and opportunities facing nations and international organizations in the pursuit of peace and prosperity. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. "The Expansion of Europe: The Culmination of Modern History" by Ramsay Muir is a comprehensive examination of the historical expansion of Europe and the global impact of this expansion. The book traces the origins of European expansion, beginning with the voyages of exploration in the 15th and 16th centuries, and explores the economic, political, and social factors that drove European expansion. Muir argues that European expansion was the culmination of a long period of development that began with the Renaissance and the Scientific Revolution. He discusses the impact of European expansion on non-European societies, including the Americas, Africa, and Asia, and examines the legacy of European imperialism in the modern world. The book also examines the rise of nationalism and the development of European power politics in the 19th and early 20th centuries, culminating in the two World Wars. Muir concludes with a discussion of the challenges facing Europe in the aftermath of World War II, including the rise of the United States as a superpower and the decline of European colonialism. Overall, "The Expansion of Europe" provides a detailed analysis of the complex historical forces that shaped the modern world, and continues to be a valuable resource for scholars and students of history.
